Partnerships and Advocacy

The artifact I chose for this standard is the agenda for the Eastchester Board of
Education meeting which took place on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015, in Eastchester, NY.
Since I do not have much experience with the K-12 American Educational System,
attending the meeting was a great experience for me and it helped me to understand a
little better how decisions are made in School districts, and how the community, teachers
and students can be active participants in this process.
During the meeting, I learned about some events that have been taking place in
the Eastchester School district and some resolutions that were presented such as the
resolution to approve special education student placements. I also learned about
some students initiatives and some activities taking place in the school district. Also,
during the meeting I was pleased to see nine members of the districts staff receiving
tenure recognition. It was interesting to learn about their professional history and some of
their outstanding work which led to the award of tenure.
What I learned from this artifact is the importance of being engaged and active in
the schools decisions advocating for the students, besides being an example for the
students and motivating them to take part in initiatives that can benefit them.
One of the areas that I would still like to grow according to this standard is my
involvement with TESOL organizations and with public events concerning the ESL
community.
