Question 1
5 out of 5 points

List 5 physical properties of material.

Selected Answer:
- Density
- thermal conductivity
- electrical conductivity
- corrosion resistance
- Melting point
Response Feedback:

[None Given]

Question 2
5 out of 5 points

For the following chief performance characteristics of materials, which mechanical property
will you select as guide?
(a) Resistance to twisting
(b) Ability of a sheet material to be stretched into a complex curvature
(c) Ability to resist shattering if dropped on the floor

(d) Ability to resist surface scratches.

As an example if the chief performance characteristic is strength in bending, the desired
mechanical property is yield strength.
Selected Answer:
a.) stiffness
b.) Ductility
c.) Toughness
d.) Hardness
Response Feedback:

[None Given]

Question 3
5 out of 5 points

(a). Use Figure 5.5 to determine which materials are inexpensive assuming that the required
modulus of elasticity is about 60 Gpa.
(b). Use Figure 5.5 to determine which materials are the least stiff, or most flexible, assuming
that the relative cost should be about 100.
Selected
Answer:

a.) Brick, pottery, ston, cement, and concrete fall under this category
b.) PTFE polymers seem to fit the requirements best, but silicones would be
more flexible and cost a little less than 100 per unit volume.

Response
Feedback:

[None Given]

Question 4
2.5 out of 5 points

(a). Assuming that the relative cost should be about 100, use Figure 5.6 to determine which
materials are the strongest.
(b). Assuming that the relative cost should be less than 100, use Figure 5.6 to determine
which materials have a large compressive strength.

Selected Answer:
Engineering ceramixs and glasses have the highest compressive
strength
Response
Feedback:

how about question a.

Question 5
5 out of 5 points

Consider the recent concept design you submitted for Lab 1. Explain in about 50
- 100 words as follows:
The primary material(s) you will select for the main part or assembly in the
product you proposed. What mechanical properties did you consider the most
important? What other factors did you consider in your materials selection?

I would choose Steel for my the material used to make the shovel, rake, and hoe
heads and probably a strong type of fiberglass for the handle. I chose the steel
because I wanted a material that was strong, yet ductile enough that it wasn't
brittle. Steel is also relatively in-expensive when compared with other material
with similar modulus of elasticity. As for the handle, fiberglass is a strong tough
material that has high fatigue strength and relatively low weight. No one would
want to use a shovel that weighed 20lb's, because a person won't wear out as
fast if they are using a lighter shovel. Though price was a concern, my main
concern was strong sturdy material that wouldn't break easily. The reason price
was not my main concern was that my product would be targeted to contractors
or people looking for a better tool that will last longer. I feel customers will be
willing to pay a larger price for a better tool.
