HUMA1100 - SLCC online Spring Semester

Instructor Deborah Francis
Reflection

This class has vastly enhanced my ability to think independently, critically, and creatively about
the topics within the course. This course has taken me across the world. I have been exposed to a
variety of cultures and experienced many different ideas from around the world. Before this
course I was ignorant to the beauty of cultures in the Middle East and the ideas that places
around the world have to offer. I have gained a great respect for the humanities and the
objectives it means to achieve.
This course has exposed me to different social groups than the ones I am typically exposed to.
My placement has restricted me to being exposed to mainly middle classed Americans. This
course allowed me to see through the eyes of different social classes. Specifically Theme 1
focused on freedom and being a citizen in America. By completing this topic I gained a greater
understanding of the challenges faced by different groups in America as a result of economic,
social and political composition.
My thoughts on individual responsibility to society were much less formed before this class.
Prior to this course my belief on an individual's responsibility to society was that they just had to
coexist without disobeying laws and causing mayhem. I see now after this class that this is not
the case. Every person has a great deal of responsibility to be a modeling image of their society.
Completing the journals and assignments pertaining to Freedom and Responsibility in Theme 1
has compelled me to arrive at my current position on an individual's responsibility to their
society.
The weekly discussions in this course changed my opinions of various topics discussed.
Interacting with my fellow students and absorbing their opinions through their posts enabled me
to see different views than my own. Some specific discussion topics include but are not limited
to; Abrahamic and Eastern religions, Personal definitions of freedom, War and Race. These
discussions impacted me very much because they were a great way to guide my curiosity to a
new topic. Whenever I would engage in these discussions I would always do independent
research regarding the topic at hand.
The structure of this course and each individual Journal, Web activity, Theme Test and
Discussion have made an impact on my approach to the topics within this course when they are
revealed to me in my daily life. The knowledge I have gained out of this course will be applied
each time I am involved in a conversation pertaining to Identity, Race, Religion, Law, Freedom,
War and more. I feel that I am able to construct a more critical and intuitive response regarding
any of these topics when I am approached with them after completing this course. In many ways

I feel that I am a more responsible and involved citizen now that I have completed this course,
because of my exposure to the course material I have gained an interest in current events in my
area and am more involved in my community.
