Name: Helen Uttarotai

Course: 9th grade Algebra

Subject of Lesson: Expressions & Functions

Period: 2nd and 3rd (58 min)

Date: November 18, 2014

Materials:
Daily Quiz (33)
Expressions and Functions Practice (160)
Notebook slides
Overview/Rationale:
This lesson is a re-teach of simplifying expressions because this is the topic that my
students struggled with most on the Quarter I Exam.
Enduring Understandings:
The big takeaway I would like for my students to have is that simplifying expressions is
useful and helpful in making the expression shorter, less complicated, and easier to deal with
when evaluating for a specific value and other applications.
Students should also draw some connections between expressions and functions and how
they are similar in simplifying and evaluating.
Goals/Objectives:
By the end of class I will know how to evaluate expressions and functions.
Essential Question:
How are expressions and functions similar?
Standards:
A1.2.1.1 Analyze and/or use patterns or relations
Daily Quiz/Warm-Up:
__10______ minutes
Review of yesterdays lesson for finding slope between two points.
One negative, positive, and zero slope
HW Review: Finding Slope 101
___3_____ minutes
Give students a few minutes to check their answers and take any questions
Simplifying Expressions
____2____ minutes
Start with what it means to simplify
Emphasize that students should distribute before they combine like terms

Simplifying by Distributing.by Combining Like Terms

___6_____ minutes

Work through first distribution example step by step. Draw arrows to each term distributing to.
Make sure to watch your signs!!! Any positives or negatives in front of your terms
Can do a side review + times + is +, + times is -, etc.
Students do 2nd example on own, circulate and find student to take through
Do similar process for combining like terms examples, circling like terms in different colors
How do I know if something is a like term? (numbers vs. terms with variables)
Now, lets do both! Distribute, then combine

___4_____ minutes

Work through first example step by step

Distribute first! Then combine like terms
Can I combine 40b and -56? Can do by accident and see if students catch mistake
Have students try 2nd example on own and find student to take through at board
Why is simplifying helpful?

___3_____ minutes

After simplifying, try evaluating expression before simplifying then with simplified expression
Which one seems easier to you? (show how simplifying makes an expression easier to work
with)
Wait, I can simplify and evaluate functions too, right?!

___4_____ minutes

Ask: How are expressions and functions similar? How are they different?
Take through first example step by step. Have students do second one on own. Then, take
volunteer to walk through at board.
Expressions & Functions Practice

___20_____ minutes

Ask students work independently and silently

Raise your hand if you have a question
Exit Slips/Closure:
2 simplifying expressions problems

____3____ minutes

Errors/Misconceptions:
Trying to combine like terms before distributing
Forgetting signs, especially negatives when distributing
Combining terms that are not like, especially numbers with terms with variables (ex. 10 and 2x
would be 12x)
Not following order of operations- subtract/add left to right
Homework:

___2_____ minutes

Finish Expressions and Functions Practice

Personal Reflections/Notes:
After teaching the lesson, add your reflections about how you felt about the lesson, how
the learners responded, whether the lesson accomplished what you planned it to do, how closely
you followed the lesson plan, and how you would change the lesson for the next time.
