institution in America

What is education
According

to Webster's dictionary,
education is:
The action or process ofeducatingor
of beingeducated;also: a stage of
such a process
2. The field of study that deals mainly
with methods of teaching and learning
in schools
1.

Education in society
Education

is important to our society

because it teaches people how to
survive and to be successful in our
society.

Education

is also a social institution

dedicated to the formal process of
transmitting culture from teachers to
students. (Witt, 180)

History of
Education
Education has been apart of
human society since 3500 B.C.
when various writing systems
were discovered in ancient
civilizations around the world.
Today, we will be focusing on
the history of American
education and its development
and impact on people who have
autism.

American Education:

Colonial
Education

Education was implemented by

the Puritans who believed in the
importance of religion.

Young boys in the upper class

society had education in reading,
writing, math, and prayers.
Education was important to
prepare them for their eventual
roles in plantation life during this
time.

American Education:

Early National
Education

Provided a crucial role in

education across the U.S by
making education apart of the
Constitution (Tenth Amendment)

Federal government established

that education is important for
people to improve their lives and
to help the nation grow.

American Education:

Common School
Movement

Era when school was made

available to ALL and not just the
rich.

Men like Horace Mann and Henry

Barnard helped by creating
common school systems
statewide.

This eventually lead to the

availability of education
regardless of gender and race
throughout the U.S into the 20th
century.

Education and
Autism

There are many symptoms in the Autism spectrum, but

the main areas that are affected in a persons life is social
interactions, communication, behaviors and interests.

Research
There are many ways for those with ASD to
learn how to interact within society.
Studies showed that peer networking
helped adolescents with ASD improve
their social skills by establishing a
cohesive social group of peers around a
student with disabilities to promote
social, communication, and other
outcomes within the classroom and/or
across the school day (Carter et al.,
2013)
Another study showed how dramas
flexibility may be harnessed in order
to help students support each others
development of creative and
communicative skills.

Research
There are many ways for those with ASD to
learn how to interact within society.
Video prompting is a form of video
instruction that breaks down target skills
into steps that are then performed
directly after viewing each clip. This
review examined studies using video
prompting techniques to teach functional
and daily living skills to individuals with
autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Researchers found that

social stories helped
children with ASD address
inappropriate behaviors.

Analysis
Functionalist Perspective:
Looking over all of the research done to help those who live life
with ASD, I believe that a functionalist would be in favor of all of
these types of strategies and opportunities to help. A
functionalists main goal is to help society work together as a
whole for the greater good of its community which is why a
functionalist would try to find ways for those with ASD to
contribute.
Conflict Theory:
Those with a conflict theory outlook would probably be the ones
fighting for equal treatment and education for those with ASD.
Conflict theorist would also want to enforce the idea of inclusive
instruction throughout America.
