Theme 2015 Celebrating the past and future
This theme was decided as a part of the Dimensional Design process, for its 20th anniversary celebration.
The Dimensional Design is the process of the annual theme, which talks about the growth of the Garden.
Reiman Garden is one of the most important areas of Iowa State University. A place which is
educative, entertaining, reserves our memorable moments and most importantly, gives the students an
opportunity to get refreshed during their busy schedule of studies.

This explains the rights of an insect, who have to equal rights to live on this planet. By collecting the
nectar from the plants, the bees provide us with sweet. If we dont protect them, we will never get honey
for rest of our lives and by doing that, we are spoiling the lives of our future generations.
A pollinator is the biotic agent (vector) that moves pollen from the male anthers of a flower to the female
stigma of a flower to accomplish fertilization or 'syngamy' of the female gametes in the ovule of the
flower by the male gametes from the pollen grain. Insect pollinators include bees, not only honey bees but

solitary species and bumblebees; other insects including pollen wasps (Masarinae); a variety of flies
including bee flies and hoverflies; lepidopterans, both butterflies and moths; and flower beetles.
Vertebrates, mainly bats and birds, but also some mammals monkeys, lemurs, possums, rodents and
some reptiles lizards pollinate certain plants. Among the pollinating birds are hummingbirds,
honeyeaters and sunbirds with long beaks; they pollinate a number of deep-throated flowers.
Reiman Garden is one of such places who wish to protect the native pollinators. They provide information
for educative purposes, for the students who are learning about horticulture, and for people who visit the
place, can understand the importance of butterflies, bees and plants.
Plants are very important in our lives, we have to treat them with care and give those plants and insects,
the respect they deserve.
The Iowa State University started it, for the students are majoring in Horticulture. Original garden was
built in 1914, near the Iowa State Horticultural Research Station. Later in 1964, it was moved near the
northeast side of the campus, which it was surrounded by the Industrial zone. Though the place was very
limited, it offered a little room for more expansion. On September 16, 1995, the Reiman Garden got its
permanent place, the place where it exists now, near the stadium. This was able to happen only because of
President Martin Jischke and his people. At the time of opening, the Reiman Gardens was just 5 acres, but
by 2002, it was expanded up to 17 acres.
Reiman Garden consists of the entry court, the Herb Garden, Rose Garden, the Campanile Garden,
Mahlstede Horticulture Learning Center, a Maintenance Building, the Childrens Garden, the Town and
Country Garden, Lake Helen, the Conservatory Complex and Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing.
Though the garden was built for the Horticulture students, it is still an amazing place for prople who are
considerate about the environment, to visit Reiman Gardens.
The Reiman Gardens also allows people to have their wedding there. There are six types of wedding
packages. Mahlstede Building wedding package, in which, there could be 74 people attending the

wedding. The couple could have their reception at the breath-taking Speer Room and an outdoor
ceremony. Hunziker House Wedding Package is similar to this. Garden Room Wedding Package, provides
a room with floor to ceiling windows that look into the tropical Conservatory. This space can seat up to
120 people, with a dance floor. Conservatory complex wedding package, is a huge space, where 250
people can attend the wedding. Similarly, there is Glass House Wedding and Winter Wedding Package,
which takes place inside the Conservatory. (Wedding Brochure)
Students who had a chance to find their soul-mate at Iowa State University, are the majority to keep their
wedding ceremonies at Reiman Gardens, to make it a memorable moment for them.
Even meetings between the staffs of Iowa State University, takes place here. Which gives the staffs an
opportunity to relax during breaks in their meetings.
The garden is a part of Iowa State University, there are several methods through which the garden is
maintained. The main way is by the maintenance department located at the Garden. They take care of
keeping the garden clean. The people working there are also trained to know about the plants and they
have been fed with the skills to take care of them.
Students from Iowa state university, join Reiman Gardens for part-time jobs and they volunteer to keep
the place clean. Even these students are taught well, to maintain the image of Reiman Gardens.
The third method, is the most important practice of Reiman Gardens. It is to allow the students of
Horticulture to take care of plants, by offering them internships. The students get to experience the topics

Reiman Gardens was built for the students, to know about the importance of plant and animal life. The
Garden has been very beneficial for students studying horticulture, botany and for students who have
interests in plants.

Reiman garden is filled with greenery during the summer and fall, which makes it the place for
refreshment. People go there, to take a break from studies. Open space with greenery everywhere is very
pleasing to every humans eyes.
Some students have kids who stay with them on campus. Those kids lack enjoyment. At that point,
Reiman Gardens comes to the rescue. The garden provides entertainments for the kids and keeps them
engaged for a long time.
In addition to that, it is near the football stadium, which attracts a lot of visitors who come to watch the
match. After seating in a crowded stadium for 5-6 hours, the garden would be a nice place to rest.
In conclusion, Reiman Garden covers the areas of entertainments, educative and most importantly
by saving the environment. It is place which, every Iowa State student should visit and learn from.
Students who didnt give importance to this place, have created a big mistake, since, they neither know
the fun in being there and spending time with their friends nor the importance of environment is learnt.
