A World Unknown

Chapter 1
Walking through the desolate halls of my once happy home I remembered a

time, so long ago that I have almost forgotten, when my family and I sat on
the couch arguing about who would live longer in a zombie apocalypse. I ran
my finger slowly across the dust that had gathered on the plastic covering of
the once comfortable, leather couch. The wooden floor boards creaked
against my shoes as I walked across the living room. Outside I could hear the
familiar roar of the truck outside, imagining how the passengers must feel
coming back to this forsaken house. I stopped outside my room, the
doorknob cold against my hand.
My heart thumped louder as I pushed open the old wooden door. As the
door swung open, my breath got caught in my throat at what I saw. Drawers
were hanging off the hinges, notebook paper was ripped from apart and
scattered across the floor, and the mattress was thrown off the bedsprings.
My suspicion was right, the room had been raided. The valuables that a
normal person would take, like my old television and laptop, were still there.
This was not an ordinary robbery. The ones responsible were looking for
something specific. I felt my stomach drop as I scrambled to grasp the small
drawer underneath the computer desk and open it. I sighed with relief when I
saw the small box; it was decorated in hot pink fabric, jewels, and extremely

gaudy stickers from my embarrassing elementary school days. To the normal

eye, it looked like a little girls jewelry or junk box. I silently thanked my
younger self for decorating the box so inconspicuously, on that one rainy day
so long ago. I quickly shoved the box in my backpack and bolted back to the
old red pickup truck, not wanting to remain any longer than needed.
My uncle Mason was sitting in the drivers seat, and smacking the
radio, most likely trying to find a station that was playing good old country
songs. My aunt Allison was sitting next to him with her mascara running and
holding a balled up tissue in her hand. I knew it hurt them to come here,
almost as much as it hurt me. I hugged the backpack closer to my chest and
hopped into the back seat. Allison turned around in her seat and eyed my
bag.
Did you find what you were looking for? she asked.
With a forced smile on my face I said, I found some family photos and
old trinkets. I really appreciate both of you for driving me here. I really
needed the closure and stuff
I choked back the tears and stared out the window. It was hard to lie to
her face after forcing her to relive such horrible memories by bringing them
here. I needed the diary and they could not know who or what was searching
for it. I was just relieved I found it first. I stared as Allison absentmindedly ran
her slender hands through her long, red hair. Her caramel eyes flitted across
to Mason as he hummed along to some song about drinking whiskey. His

shaggy brown hair was blowing across his face and his deep brown eyes
stared out at the open road.
The pine trees gazed down upon us as we pulled onto a small side
road. A little further down the road stood a small town called Valhaven. With
a population of three thousand, everyone knew each other and everyone
knew almost everything about each other. My aunt and uncles house stood
on a farm a couple minutes away from the town. The house was just big
enough for the three of us. The baby blue siding complimented the white
roof and white window shutters. A large wooden deck wrapped around the
house and out to the pool in the back. I walked up the front steps, eager to
get to my room and open the box.
Its getting late now. Dont forget to lock the windows and close the
curtains, you hear? No going outside the room and no looking out the
windows. Well bring you anything you need if you call us. We love you
hunny. My uncle called out to me.
I waved back at him. I know, I know, I know. Im heading to bed early
anyways. Its been a long day. I love you both too.
I closed the bedroom door slowly. I heaved a sigh as I walked over to
the windows. I grabbed the iron bars and positioned them in front of the
inside of the window. I screwed them in place and tugged on them as hard as
I could, using what little weight and strength I had. When I was satisfied, I
prepared the other window. Nothing could get in the windows, but I could still

get out if I removed them. Efficient. I pulled the thick black curtains over the
windows, drowning out any source of light other than the small lamp beside
my bed. I grabbed a water bottle from the case and plopped on the old
mattress, spilling the contents of my bag onto the comforter. An assortment
of Coins, granola bars, and other clutter scattered across my legs. I
hesitantly picked up the small box lying next to my ankle.
My grandmother, Charlotte, gave me the box right before the accident.
I tried to remember what she said as she gave it to me. I remembered people
in white lab coats dragging my grandmother out of the house. My mom was
sitting on the couch crying and my dad was sitting next to her, trying to
console her. I was too young to understand what was going on. My
grandmother shoved the box into my tiny hands.
You can never show anyone Rosette. Never. You have to keep this box
safe sweety. Your life depends on it. Dont open it until you need it. Please.
Remember the danger in
My grandmothers words trailed off as one of the doctors stuck a
needle in her neck. Horrified, I ran to my room and threw the box into the
empty computer drawer. For some reason I did not want anyone to see the
box. Not even my parents. The only other time I touched it was when I was
experimenting with crafting and felt a need to decorate anything and
everything in pink fabric and stickers. I never opened it though, I only
decorated the outside. When I got older, I came to understand that my

grandmother was crazy and that was why she was taken to a mental facility.
I still could not shake the feeling that the box was important. She may have
left me something valuable or something she treasured, and wanted to pass
it down to her grandchild. Either way, I knew I had to go back for it.
I unfastened the little clasp and gradually pulled open the lid. The box
was hollow, and I coughed as dust flew into my face. Inside there were two
objects, a knife and a necklace. Why would she leave me these? The knife
was beautifully odd looking. The blade was thin and razor sharp. On the right
side of the blade was an etched on outline of a flame that ran from the base
to the point. I ran my finger across the flame. Strange design. The hilt was
white and had markings etched all over, similar to the flame. I squinted my
eyes at the markings. I could not think of any language that had these
markings. I put the knife back into the box and picked up the necklace. A
small golden pendant hung from a long, golden chain. The same flame from
the knife was etched over it. In the middle was a circle. The flames formed
some kind of pinwheel; four flames came from the circle and weaved itself
onto the back of the pendant. My grandmother loved me dearly. She used to
come over all the time to babysit me when my parents had different work
schedules. I wondered if she cherished these items and wanted to pass them
down to me. I slipped the necklace over my neck and tucked the pendant
underneath my shirt. I shoved the box with the knife underneath my bed.

Chapter 2

Beep. Beep. Beep. I groaned as my hand slammed against the snooze

button. Maybe I can get away with doing the morning chores later. I smiled
as I thought about catching an hour more of sleep.
Rosette? Rosette! The milk aint going to fetch itself! Rise and Shine.
I squeezed the pillow to my ears. Uncle Masons voice still rang through
despite my best efforts. I knew I should count my blessings. After the
accident I needed a lot of therapy, so my uncle and aunt decided it would be
best to home school me as long as I helped out on the farm. I grabbed the
bag of apples from outside. Sister Marian was carefully written on the clear
plastic wrap. My uncle was already picking the ripe apples from the trees.
Do you have the grocery list I left on the counter?
I grabbed the paper from my pocket and waved it in the air. My yellow
bike was leaning against the fence. I threw the bag of apples and my purse
into the basket. The town was bustling with people setting up their shops and
doing their morning routines. I rode my bike up the hill where the church, St.
Augustus, sat overlooking the town. The church was a very old, traditional

church with stone walls, a high ceiling, and had the most stunning mosaic
glass windows. I was not religious but many people in the town were.
Sister Marian?
Sister Marian beamed me a smile as she was closing the office door.
Bless you and your family for bringing the church these apples every
morning. The children all love them and its so nice to see their faces light up
when we take out the apples. May the Lord continue to bless you, sweet
Rosette.
I handed the apples to her, trying not to cringe. If the Lord really
wanted to bless me, he would not have taken my family from me or would
have killed me along with them.
Thank you for the kind words, Sister Marian. You know its always a
pleasure to deliver these apples to help give back to the community and to
those who need it. My uncle is fond of this church, the people in his
community, and the Lord himself.
I may have not been religious but Sister Marian was one of the kindest
people I knew. If anyone deserved to go to heaven, it was her. I kissed her
cheek goodbye and made my way to the bakery. As always, the smell of
fresh bread and muffins filled the air. I took a deep breath and made my way
to the loaves of bread. I could see the top of a white hat sticking out from
above the racks. I grinned as I plucked the hat from the head of my innocent

victim. A golden blonde, curly ponytail bobbed against her small frame. Her
gray eyes narrowed in at my face and she flung her pale arms in the air.
OH. MY. GOD. Rosette! You almost made me drop this tray of banana
bread slices. I would have killed you.
Lillian Mayfield covered her chest with her hand in a dramatic fashion. I
moved to the farm when I was ten, its been six years since then. My aunt
was close to her mom so they naturally introduced us when I moved there.
We were best friends ever since. Her parents were overly religious. Shes
been home schooled and working in the family bakery since she was old
enough to. I picked up a piece of banana bread from her plate and plopped it
in my mouth.
She rolled her eyes at me. Thats a dollar, missy. Youre lucky my mom
loves you. Remember to come by the house when youre all done.
I pulled the shopping list from my purse: a loaf of bread and a
cinnamon pecan pastry for aunt Allison. I have a couple more stops and
then I will be right over.
I gathered the rest of the groceries and headed back to the farm. Uncle
Mason came out to help with the bags. The front door swung open and my
aunt Allison came scurrying down the sidewalk.
She started poking at the bags. Please tell me you got my pecan
pastry. Lillians mom makes it sooooo good! Her husband is another

story. She picked the pastry from the bag and made her way back to the
house. I stared at her, admiring how a simple pastry made her so joyful. Im
heading over to Lillians house, okay?
Uncle Mason stared off into the distance. Just make sure youre home
before nightfall. If it gets too late, call and Ill pick you up.

I entered the bakery as Lillian was taking off her apron. Are your
parents out again? She nodded her head.
Her parents weremysterious. Always out somewhere or off on
business. I cant remember the last time I really saw them in person. Lillian
was the same age as me. I felt awful for her but she assured me that she was
okay with it. Honestly, I would have preferred if I had more time alone. They
never told me why I had to be home before dark, why I could never leave my
room at night, or why I had to put bars on my windows. I thought they were
being over-protective since they did not have children on their own and I was
suddenly thrust on their laps. I was grateful that they took me in so I obeyed
their rules without complaint. Besides that, they were pretty easygoing about
what I did.
We played an amusing game of Monopoly which ended with me
throwing my monopoly money at Lillian in defeat. I stood up from her bed.

Im going to use the bathroom. She grinned. Ill go get some snacks
then.
I walked down the tiny hallway to the bathroom. I shut the door and
leaned against it, breathing heavily. I wiped the sweat from my forehead. I
felt sick, really sick. I splashed my face with cold water in the sink. I gently
wiped the water with the hand towel. When I looked into the mirror, I
shrieked and dropped the towel. The face in the mirror was similar to mine.
She had the same straight, black hair that came down my back. The same
pale skin that almost appeared porcelain. Everything, except for her eyes,
was identical to my own. There were no familiar dark blue eyes staring back
at me. Instead, one red and one gold eye stared back at me. I rubbed my
hands all over my face to check if it was real. The mirror reflected my
actions.
I ran out of the bathroom and made my way downstairs. I heard Lillian
calling out to me. Rosette? Whats wrong? I opened the front door. I feel
sick and its dark out anyways
I ran out to my bike, wanting to get home as fast as possible. As I was
leaving I heard Lillian drop the plate of snacks on the floor. Rosette, come
back! I can help you. Its dangerous out there if I dont Her words drowned
out when I shut the door.
I pedaled as fast I could. It was dark out; the streetlights were my only
source of light. I should have called my uncle but I wanted the fresh air. The

house was only ten minutes away, what could go wrong? They were always
being paranoid. A growl echoed close by. I slammed on the brakes. The tires
screeched against the sidewalk and the bike was hurled to the ground. My
body hit the sidewalk hard. I winced when I tried to get back up. The growl
started to get louder, as if it was coming towards me. I turned the corner and
my whole body froze in fear.
The thing was huge, bigger than any house pet I have ever seen. The
thing looked like a dog, almost like a Rottweiler. Its body was a shadowy,
black haze. The both of its eyes were entirely consumed by an intense red. It
bared its fangs, and I gasped when I saw the blood dripping from them. This
is not real. This is not real. The animal lifted its head and howled. I cried out
as I covered my ears and fell to the ground. It is as if it was calling out to
something or someone. I looked around and realized something was very,
very wrong. The town was somehow different, almost completely foreign.
There was a thick fog that surrounded the town making everything blurry. I
shivered. It felt like there were eyes everywhere, searching for something.
My head felt dizzy.
Rosette, hide in the closet. Quickly honey and be as quite as you can
no matter what. We love you, so very much.
I cried out in pain as my mothers voice filled my head.
Its time to wake up Rosette. Its time to open your eyes. Theyre
coming for you.

I screamed as I heard something shatter around me. When I opened

my eyes, little light particles fluttered around me. The animal was gone and I
lied weeping on the ground. I felt a gentle hand stroke my hair but my
conscious was already somewhere else.

Chapter 3

Ten years ago I was in my room, making a drawing for my mom. My

mother was downstairs making dinner. My father was in his study reading a
novel. My mother was still upset about what happened with her mom.
Everyone was still shaken about what happened with grandmother and what
made her go crazy.
Rosette? My mother called up.
I grabbed the drawing of a butterfly and hurried down the steps. My
mother was beautiful with her tall frame, short blonde hair, and brown eyes. I
took after my dad with his black hair and blue eyes.
I grabbed a water bottle from the fridge. Mother I had that dream
again. The lady was braiding my hair and talking about the moon again. She
says they need me but she scares me. Shedoesnt have eyes. Her nails are

long and they always scrape against my head. This time was different. She
said they were finally ready. I dont know what for.
My mother grew quite. She put the cutting knife down and looked at
me seriously. Rosette. Its just a dream. You know how I feel about you
bringing them up. My grandmother told you fairy tales, nothing was true.
There is no such thing as monsters.
I twirled my thumbs. But mom
She raised her eyebrow. I threw up my hands and went to set up the
table. My dad came out of his study and pulled out a chair.
Man am I one lucky guy. Smell that Rosette? A way to a mans heart is
through his stomach remember that. He winked at her. She rolled her eyes
at him and I could not help but giggle.
It was a pleasant dinner until there was a knock on the door. My
parents looked at each other. The knock came louder. I heard growling from
outside the kitchen window. My mother grabbed my hand. She looked to my
father. They really did come.
She pulled my arm. We have to go upstairs. Hurry, Rosette.
I watched as my father took out a knife. There was a bang as the front
door was smashed in. The growling grew louder as I saw a huge black dog
enter the house. My mother continued to yank me up the stairs to their
bedroom. I saw a glimpse of my father leaping at the dog. My mother shut

the bedroom door and pushed her dresser in front of it. She yanked open the
closet door and pushed her clothes aside. Inside there was a small hideaway.
She opened the latch and pulled it open.
Get in Rosette. I shook my head. You have to get in. NOW! Quickly
honey and be as quite as you can no matter what happens. We love you, so
very much.
My body trembled as I climbed inside. She kissed my forehead and
shut the door. From the cracks in the wall, I saw a bright light and then it was
dark. There was a loud bang at the bedroom door. I covered my ears and
buried my face in my thighs. I heard a mans voice.
Well, well, well. The Lockharts arent as very powerful as I thought.
Your husband, Lucas, killed a few of my children. That wasnt very nice. The
bloodhounds love a good challenge. In the end, he really didnt stand a
chance did he? He was once as powerful as I was but he grew soft. He turned
on us for you. The little angel bitch. Oh Maribelle, how I hate to see you like
this. I may let you live if you tell me where the child is.
Why do you even want her? Shes just a child?!
Simple. Shes half angel and half demon. The first of her kind. You
dont need to know our plans. Just hand her over.
Over my dead body.
If thats what you want.

I heard a loud crash. My mother screamed and screamed. Minutes

passed and it grew quite.
Where are you little girl?
The closet door swung open. I felt my heart thump quickly in my chest.
I heard a bark. Dammit shes not here. They must have hidden her
away at somebodys house. Lets go!
I waited until silence was the only thing that engulfed me. Several
hours later I heard the sound of police sirens. I wailed as loud as I could. I
heard the closet door open and an officer grabbed the latch and pulled the
hideaway open.
We have a live one here! Someone call an ambulance immediately!
Come out sweetie. Its okay. Im one of the good guys.
I crawled out of the small space. The police officer tried to block my
view but it was too late. Everything around me became a blur. My mother lay
on the ground in a puddle of blood. There were deep slashes on her face and
all over her body. An image of wings was burned into the floor boards
underneath her body. The officer walked me downstairs. My father lay in the
living room. He was dead; the same was as my mother. There were no wings
underneath his body. I sobbed onto the police officers shoulder.
Sir, it looks like a wild animal attack. Their gashes and the scratch
marks on the floor are consistent with those of a wild animal.

I hiccupped. It wasnt an animal attack! There was a monster! He

killed them!
I screamed and kicked at the officer. No one was listening to me. They
wanted me. This was my fault. My parents were dead. I continued to kick
until I saw someone from an ambulance walk up. He stuck a needle in my
neck. The poor girl. Everything went black.
I woke up to see Lillian staring at my face. I stared at the ceiling. I
remember everything.
I slowly sat up. I was in her room. Lillian reached out her hand but I
slapped it away. She sighed. You can finally see everything now.
I stared at her. Her hair flowed down her back in a single braid adorned
with small flowers. Her eyes were the color of gold. She was wearing white
jeans and a white blouse that was low cut in the back.
Arent angels supposed to wear gowns or something? Where are your
wings?
She gently smiled at me. Traditionally, yes. I do have the loveliest
gown back in Heaven. However, its harder to move around on earth in a
dress so I picked something humans usually wear in their daily lives. As for
my wings

She inhaled and exhaled. Two enormous wings appeared from the
middle of her back. Now I can see why her blouse was cut low in the back.
They were pure white and bursting with soft feathers.
Angels can make their wings appear and disappear whenever they
want.
I looked at her. Who are you really?
She looked sad. My name is Lillian. I am one of Gods children and
govern the life of every living thing. When Heaven heard about you, I was
sent down to look after you. Heaven isvulnerable. God left one day and
hasnt returned. The demons know about this and they are desperately
trying to open the gate and finally destroy Heaven. I believe that is where
you come in. I dont know what their plan is but I know you are valuable to
them.
She paused. I could not take it anymore. What I dont understand is
why you look like this but I saw something different. What have I been
seeing?
She nodded. I have the power to manipulate minds. You always had
the Sight but it didnt awaken until the accident. When you came to the farm,
I used my power to create a protection field around you. I manipulated the
way you perceived things and how people saw you. This protected you from
not only us, but those demons too.

That night I was going to re-power the charm but you left before I got
a chance to. What you saw that night, was a Bloodhound. High powered
demons are able to use them to do their dirty work. They are used to search
for people and even to kill people. Your uncle has you put those bars on your
windows to try to keep them out.
What do you mean high powered dem
She cut me off. Theres no time. We have to go see your grandmother.
She has all the answers.

Chapter 4

I looked at Lillian aghast. My grandmother? She was in a mental facility

for a reason, was she not crazy? With everything that happened in my life,
she sounds like the sane one and I was the one who should be in that place.
Lillian dug out some keys from her purse. Ill drive.
I looked at her and then to the silver sports car. Angels have
licenses?

I laughed as Lillian squinted her eyes at me. The hospital was thirty
minutes out of town. We walked up to the front desk and asked where
Charlotte Lockharts room was. We made our way to the elevator to the tenth
floor. I hesitantly knocked on the door. I have not seen her for a very long
time and I was suddenly feeling nervous.
Come in.
We entered the room. She sat on a rocker chair near the window,
knitting. Her silver hair was pulled to the side. Her golden eyes turned slowly
towards us. Even though she was elderly, she still looked young and innocent
in the face. She wore a long dress that was low cut in the back. I guess she
still had her wings. She slowly rose from the chair and walked over to us. She
looked at Lillian.
Lillian. You look so lovely. Its been too long. How has everything been
going up in Heaven?
Lillian took her hand. Its chaos. God left and hasnt returned. Angels
are whispering that God abandoned us. Hell is growing stronger every day.
Everyone is afraid.
Grandmother put her hand over her chest. Oh dear. This is worst than
I thought. Do not have fear Lillian. I taught you well, have faith.

She turned to me. My dear Rosette. She wrapped her frail arms
around my chest. This must be hard for you my child. Hows my daughter
Allison been treating you?
I forgot about them! They must have the whole FBI and police force
looking for me! Lillian placed her hand on my shoulder.
I can see the panic in your eyes. Relax. I placed a little charm on
them. They think you are in your room reading a book.
I relaxed my shoulders. Allison and Mason have been really nice to
me. I thought they were overprotective but I realize now they were just
protecting me.
Grandmother sighed. My daughter Allison is human but she grew up
knowing there wasunexplainable things out there she didnt understand.
They knew what happened with your parents wasnt caused by some wild
animal but they also dont have the Sight to see them. They would rather not
have anything to do with us and I never blamed her for leaving when she
could.
She sat back down in her chair, staring out at the sky. Lillian walked
over to her.
I always wondered why you never returned to Heaven.

She smiled. Youre so young, Lillian. I lived for hundreds of years. I

cant imagine leaving the one place where I fell in love with life again. Even if
I wanted to, I couldnt. I dont have my Grace anymore.
Lillians face grew dark. What happened to your Grace?! You cant get
into heaven without it. You cant even use any powers anymore. You might as
well be a human without it.
Grandmother looked sad. Calm down. I used what remaining Grace I
had to give Rosette the key to changing her fate.
She pointed to the necklace hidden in my shirt. I pulled it out. Lillian
looked taken aback.
You know that charm is forbidden. It not only uses an angels entire
Grace but can destroy the user if they arent strong enough. This could kill
Rosette.
Grandmother looked over at me. Let me start from the beginning.
It all started when I was looking down on earth. I was busy blowing life
into the flowers on earth. I saw a young man out working on his family farm.
The sun was beating down on his bare back. He had short brown hair and
brown eyes. He was just any normal human but when I saw him caring for his
sick cow. I was love struck. He gently wrapped its sprained leg when it got
hurt and rubbed its neck when it became sick. I knew I wanted to leave
Heaven so I went to find Lillian. She was just a little angel at the time but she

was destined to grow up and take over my job eventually. I shared all the
knowledge I knew with her before I left. I talked to God about leaving. He
said he had business on earth and that I could come with him. He wanted his
angels to be happy, even if that meant it wasnt in Heaven. I now realized he
had ulterior motives.
I left Heaven and went to the young boys house. His family took me in
thinking I was an orphan. We ended up falling in love. He was human and I
was an angel. I gave birth to two girls. Allison and Maribelle. Allison was
human and Maribelle was an angel. Maribelle was lovely and caught the eyes
of a high demon named Lucas. They had a child, you Rosette, who was born
with half demon and half angel blood. The first ever to be born from both
worlds.
This all started when an angel named Calcifer wanted Gods position.
God banned him from heaven and stripped him of his wings. It was the
ultimate humiliation for an angel. Calcifers anger created his own place
called Hell. You can think of Heaven and Hell as separate dimensions from
earth. You need Grace and purity to enter Heaven. You need a heart of sin to
enter Hell. Calcifer used humans against God by turning them against him
with sin. He soon made his own army of demons. They want to rage war on
Heaven and completely destroy it. Even with a large army, they still cant get
in. There is only one way to break the gate to heaven. The blood moon and
the mixed blood of someone who is both angel and demon. You are the key

they need to get into Heaven. If the gate is broken, Heaven crumbles and
every angel falls to this earth. This makes it easier for the demons to
eliminate them. If there is no Heaven, then chaos falls upon this earth. If
people die, they will be stuck on this earth and stuck between the battle of
angels and demons.
Listen closely. The demons are evolving. There are demons that are
deformed looking. They appear grotesque, entirely black eyes, and nonhuman. They feed off the evil in the world and kill without question. They are
the most common demons you will encounter. You never want to encounter a
high demon. They are intelligent and can appear as any normal human being
so they blend into society. They are the only ones who can use the
Bloodhounds. They normally have eyes that are red and black shadow tribal
tattoos that run up both arms. These tattoos are what control the
Bloodhounds. If you see a demon with these tattoos, run. They are
astonishingly strong and fast.
She pointed to my necklace. I used a forbidden charm on that
necklace but you have to use the knife to make it work. When you stab a
high demon with the knife, the blood is captured through the flame on the
knife. The blood is then transferred to the necklace, to the small circle in the
center. Here comes the hard part. The demon is going to fight to control your
soul. You have to have willpower to defeat it. If you can defeat it, you have
control over the demon. You can summon the demon to help you. While it

may be helpful, there is a grave cost in using the necklace. Every time you
call upon the power of the demon, you lose your humanity or life source. If
the demon is powerful enough, your consciousness will slip into darkness and
the demon will control your body. Use it only when your life is in mortal
danger.
There is a demon named Kaden. Kaden is Calcifers son. Never fight
him. He is the strongest demon in Hell. He is the one who killed your parents
and has been searching for you this whole time. He has killed many girls who
he believed were you.
She scratched her neck and sighed. I dont know how to tell you this
but God is somewhere on this earth. He came to visit me not long ago. He
appears to be meditating somewhere in the mountains. He looks like an
elderly man with a long, white beard and bald. His eyes are blind and he
hunches his back. He may be able to help you with the blood moon. I dont
know why the demons need it. Im sorry.
Lillian looked over at me. The next blood moon isnt too far away. I
would say less than a week.
There was a howl and I covered my ears in pain. Lillian ran to the
window.
Theres Bloodhounds out there!

My grandmother grabbed a small dagger from underneath her pillow.

They found us. Ill buy you guys some time. Lillian, get her somewhere safe.
If they break the gate of Heaven open, we are all doomed.
Lillian looked at my grandmother like she was crazy. You cant fight
these Bloodhounds! They will kill you! I cant let you do that. You were my
mentor. You watched me grow up and
Lillian started choking up. Grandmother hugged her tightly. I love you
both. Ill be fine Lillian. Ive lived long enough. If my sacrifice means you two
can go on living, then its a worthy death. I still have some fight in me. They
wont take me down that easily.
She kissed us on our foreheads and snuck out of the room. Lillian
raised her hands high above her head. She started chanting in some
language. Silver threads appeared above her head. She flicked her wrists
around the threads burst out of the room.
Ive casted a small charm on the hospital. No one can see Charlotte or
anything that is going on. It just sounds like dogs barking outside.
Lillian grabbed hand. We have to go.
I tried to tug my hand back. We cant leave grandmother behind!
Shell die! I dont want to lose her! You dont understa
Silence! The whole room shook. A bright light filled the room. Lillians
wings filled the whole room. Her eyes glowed a dark gold. She was mad.

She wants us to live! I am going to honor her last words. We have to leave
now.
We ran out of the room and towards the emergency staircase. When
we got closer to the first floor, I could hear the yelps of the Bloodhounds.
Lillian pulled out two daggers from her pants. A bright light bounced off the
blades.
The light hurts them. We have to keep moving. Whatever happens,
keep running and dont look back.
Outside there were a scattering of the Bloodhounds bodies. My
grandmother was stronger than I thought. We ran past the bodies and
suddenly the world stopped. My grandmother lay next to the body of a
Bloodhound. Half her face looked like it was torn away from the hounds
fangs. Her gown was soaked in blood from the deep slash across her body.
Her lifeless eyes stared out at the sky. A pair of wings were burned into the
sidewalk underneath her body. If I could see past my tears, she somehow
looked peaceful.

Chapter 5

We made our way back to the farm. I needed to get the dagger for the
necklace.
We have to see where all the mountains are around this area. God has
to be at one of those if he came to visit Charlotte.
Lillians eyes were swollen. My grandmother really meant a lot to her. I
rested my hand on her shoulder. I knew when the next blood moon was and I
know we were too late. The only things to do were stay alive and pray these
demons dont find us. We made our way up the driveway of the small house.
Something was wrong. The front door was hanging off its hinges. The
windows were all shattered and to my horror, there was blood all over the
porch. There was no sign of any Bloodhound bodies. What happened here?
I jumped out of the car and ran for the house. I could hear Lillian crying
after me. I pushed the broken door out of my way. The smell hit my nose. I
covered it with my arm and made my way inside. My shoes spattered against
the blood on the floor. There was so much blood. Everywhere. Aunt Allison!
Uncle Mason! I hurried my way to my bedroom to get the knife. I shoved my
hand under the bed, feeling for the box. I grabbed it and pulled it out. I
opened it and, thankfully, the knife was still in there. I slipped in the back of
my pants. I made my way down to the kitchen. The amount of blood
escalated as I got closer. I saw two bodies hanging upside from the kitchen
ceiling. I screamed. My aunt and uncle were skinned and probably alive
during it. I grabbed the dining room chair for balance as I hurled.

I could hear Lillian shouting from outside. I just got a phone call. Sister
Marian was brutally stabbed inside the church...
Her words trailed off when she saw the scene. She grabbed my
shoulders and tried dragging me to the front door. Its too late honey. We
have to go. It isnt safe here.
They were killing everyone I loved. My parents, my grandmother, my
aunt, my uncle, and Sister Marian. We were almost to the door when we
heard a voice.
I finally found you. You are a hard one to find. These people were of no
help. They kept insisting you were here, in your room reading a book.
The demon looked like a regular young man. He was tall and lean. He
had black, disheveled hair and a stubble beard. He was in a black and white
suit. His eyes burned a bright red and I would bet my whole savings fund he
had shadowy tattoos running up his arms. I heard the growls of his
Bloodhounds behind him. He was undeniably good looking. Lillian pushed me
behind her. Her body glowed and I could sense she was ready for a fight.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Kaden. These little guys are my
Bloodhounds. If you come with me willingly Rosette, no one else will get hurt
or I will simply take you by force. Your call.
Lillian pulled me close. When I attack, you run and you keep running.
Get out of this town and as far away as you can.

She pushed me away from her. She cried out as she flung herself
towards the demon. This guy killed everyone I loved. He was the son of all
evil. I covered my face and wept. There was no way I was going to outrun the
Bloodhounds. I watched Lillian confront Kaden. She was skilled in fighting. If
they were going to have anyone watch over me, I was glad it was her. Her
body was light and nimble. She used her wings whenever she could to try to
get an edge over him. He was too powerful. She sliced his arm with her
blade. The suit ripped and his arm began to sizzle from the burn. He rolled up
his sleeves.
I had enough of this fooling around.
He grabbed a hold of her wings. Lillians horrified face mirrored mine.
She shrieked out in pain. His hands began to glow red and in a flash, her
wings lit up in flames. The burnt feathers fluttered to the floor in ash. He
raised his hand above his head. Black shadows began to dance around him.
He grabbed Lillians face and the shadows entered her body. She flailed on
the floor and black blood poured from her mouth and eyes. I cried out but
she didnt move. He killed her too. He killed everyone. I was alone.
He stepped over body and picked me up by my shirt. You are coming
with me now. Try not to run away. My Bloodhounds are terribly bored since
they didnt get to play with the little angel girl. I give her credit, she was
tough. She actually scraped me with that knife. Its going to burn for a while
because of that.

My eyes went blank. I should let him kill me. At least that way I could
be with my family again. Everyone would be there with me. The pain and
suffering would stop. The guy threw me into the back seat of his car. Two
Bloodhounds sat on either side of me. Blood dripped from their fangs and
onto my hands. I saw my reflection in their lifeless, red eyes. I was too numb
to watch where we were going.
We arrived at a small park just outside the city. It was wide and there
were hardly any trees nearby. This spot was perfect for moon gazing as it
allowed full access to the sky. The blood moon cant be here already?
The blood moon wont be here until tomorrow night. I have to make
sure we have the honorable sacrifice prepped and ready. Other demons
should be gathering here soon. I have to leave to gather some materials. Ill
leave these two cuties for your convenience.
He smiled as if he won the lottery. In a way, he did. Heaven will fall
tomorrow and it will be my fault. What will happen with the other angels and
the souls once they fall to earth? Will everyone really be wiped out by the
demons? I shuttered at the thought of them ending up like Lillian or my aunt
and uncle. It was a brutal death and they deserved better. They were only
human after all.
He chained my body to a nearby tree. The Bloodhounds sat carefully
next to me. He waved goodbye and left in his car. I cried out for help but I
knew it was useless. Nobody ever came to this park, especially at night. I

wiggled my body around but I only scraped my skin against the bark. These
chains could not be broken normally.
A dark shadow appeared in front of me. A man stepped forward. I
never saw him before. He was older with peppered hair and red eyes. He was
a demon also. A high powered demon. I struggled harder in the chains. My
skin was raw against the bark. Is he going to kill me? The man came closer
and grabbed my face in his hands.
So you are the girl who is going to make my dreams come true. His
laugh was sinister as he squeezed my face. Ive been waiting for hundreds
of years to bring that old man to his knees. To think a demon had to sleep
with an angel? Incredible. Oh where are my manners, my name is Calcifer.
Im sure by now you had heard of me. Oh dont cry my child. Your sacrifice
will be beautiful. I have a kingdom to run so Ill leave everything to my son.
You be good for him and I might save you a seat down in Hell if you would
like.
He laughed as he retreated back to the shadows. I closed my eyes and
awaited my fate.

Nightfall was almost here. Kaden grabbed a golden bowl and placed it
in the middle of the park, where the moonlight was going to hit it. He

unchained me and dragged me to the bowl. We were the only ones in the
park.
No one knows whats going to happen so everybody is staying as far
away as possible. Its just you and I.
The blood moon shone down us. If I was going to do anything, it was
now. He took a knife from his back pocket and held it over my wrists.
No!
I screamed and threw my weight at him. The knife slashed against my
arm and blood trickled into the bowl. Kaden was on the ground looking
stunned and I quickly used the element of surprise in my favor. I grabbed the
knife and plunged it in his chest. He cried out and the knife began to glow.
The once clear flame turned crimson and my pendant glowed beneath my
shirt. I pulled it out and watched in awe as the blood drained from the knife
and into the small circle.
I was not strong enough. My consciousness was fading. I saw the sky
light up with lightening. There were loud explosions coming from the sky. The
sky turned dark and the clouds began to swirl. Was the gate broken? My body
trembled. Kaden was gaining control of my body.
No! My head snapped back and my eyes turned crimson red. It was
over.
