be able to correctly implement quotations in their draft of their research paper which will be

Topic: Have you previously used quotations in any other papers you've written? How do you
think quotations from your sources will help your argument as you continue drafting?
Students will pair share with a neighbor.
STATED OBJECTIVE: 10 Minutes
Today we will be looking at a handout that explains how to properly use and cite sources in our
papers. After that we will also begin writing our rough drafts using the outline you completed a
few days ago.
ACTIVE LEARNING:
Introduce: 10 Minutes
As a class we will go over the hand out: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Citing Sources in
Ebackpack. For summarizing sources I will cover the following: As a general rule, a good summary requires balancing what the original author is saying with the writers own focus. Generally
speaking, a summary must at once be true to what the original author says while also emphasizing those aspects of what the author says that interest you, the writer.
Next, I will cover how to properly paraphrase sources by giving the students an example of a
source then show them how a source was paraphrased:
The original passage:
Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes.

In research papers students often quote excessively, failing to keep quoted material down to a
desirable level. Since the problem usually originates during note taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim.
The last item we will cover is how to cite their sources. The handout will have the following example: A legitimate paraphrase with source cited:

The handout will also include examples of a paraphrase with a source included.
Explain: 5 Minutes
As a class we will briefly look at a sample research paper that includes sources in the writing and
has a works cited page. I will address the following points with my students:
-When choosing what to quote, be careful not to select quotations just for the sake of demonstrating that youve read the authors work; you need to make sure they support your argument.
-An alternative to direct quotation is paraphrase. Remember that a paraphrase is not simply a minor change or reordering of some words. You must completely transform the selection into your
own words, while still accurately communicating the information.

Next, the students will begin working on their rough drafts of their research papers. They will
use their previously completed outlines to help them in their drafting, and they will also use the
new information on citing sources to guide them through using their 6 annotated bibliographies.
Evaluate: 5 Minutes
During this time I will be having individual conferences with the students. This time will be used
for the students to ask any questions or address anything they are struggling with during the
drafting process.
CLOSURE: 5 Minutes
