Subject Area 2:

SCIENCE

Background
They would know about some things which come under living things such as
human beings and why. Then about non-living things such as a teddy bear.
Then we start writing on a board while discussing some differences between
living and non-living things. Then we will make a list of characteristics of
living things on one half of the sheet and non-living things on other half of
the sheet and hang it on the wall.
Theme: Animals
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Language level: speech emergent

Relevant standard (from ODE web site):

K.1 Structure and Function: The natural world includes living and non-living
things.
K.1P.1 Compare and contrast characteristics of living and non-living things.
Preparation
Content Objective: They will learn the difference between the living and nonliving things by seeing an earthworm and gummy worm.
Language Objectives: They will see and find out the difference between the
earthworm and gummy worm and fill out the worksheet on it in groups.
Then they discuss them with the whole class.
Materials: Earthworms, gummy worms, worksheets, T graphic organizers.
Vocabulary: Living things, nonliving things, earthworm, gummy worm.
Motivation
First I would ask them the questions such as do they know what are living
things and non-living things and why they think they come under that
category. Then I would show them some pictures then discuss and ask them
few more questions such as Are these living things? How do you know? Are

these things not living? Why do you think so? How are they alike or
different?
Presentation
Review the objectives and tell the students that they will be learning about
living things and nonliving things by using real earthworm and gummy
worm. Model and tell them that they will also use a T graphic organizer
where one side is living and other half side is non-living things and some
pictures of living and non-living things and they have to place those pictures
on the corresponding sides.
Practice/Application
We would read a book about living and nonliving things by me reading first
and then let them read. I will start with telling them that the world is made
up of living and nonliving things and then asking them some questions such
as does anybody knows what a living thing is. Then we would discuss about
some things which come under living things such as human beings and why.
Then I will ask what non-living things are and discuss about them such as a
teddy bear. Then we start writing on a board while discussing some
differences between living and non-living things. Then we will make a list of
characteristics of living things on one half of the sheet and non-living things
on other half of the sheet and hang it on the wall.
I will write the vocabulary words which are needed for them to learn and
discuss about those words and meaning of those words such as living, nonliving, earthworm etc. I will make them do the hands on experiment such as
I will show them what to do like touching etc. they will see the earthworm
and gummy worm and then find out the difference between the earthworm
and gummy worm as group. Then I would let them discuss the differences
between those two and fill the worksheet. I would move around the
classroom to see if anyone needs help and explain them if needed.
Review/Assessment
I would like to use graphic organizers to teach science. I will use a T chart
organizer where I would write living things on one side and non-living things
on other side. Then I would discuss with the kids the characteristics and
develop a list of their responses writing them on the corresponding sides. I
would give them a T graphic organizer where one side is living and other half

side is non-living things and some pictures of living and non-living things
and tell them to place those pictures on the corresponding sides.
Extension
Next day ask the students the following questions to see that they have
understood.
Which is true or false?
How would you define living and non-living things?
Can you tell why this is a living thing?
Can you tell why this is a non-living thing?
Can you tell some difference what that earthworm can do but the gummy
worm cant do?
Which one do you think is living thing?
