NMSU Graduate School
Within the next year, I will be graduating with a bachelors degree in accountancy, and I
hope to continue on into graduate school at New Mexico State University. My goal is to receive
a masters of accountancy degree and eventually become a Certified Public Accountant. With
this certification I can go on to work with private accounting firms as an external auditor or
corporate tax accountant, or I can work internally as an accountant for any business.
New Mexico State University offers a graduate degree in accountancy. The program is
led by director Cindy Siepel, who earned a Phd in business/accounting from Oklahoma State
University (New Mexico State University, 2014). Dr. Siepel is a faculty advisor for the NMSU
chapter of Beta Alpha Si, the national accounting fraternity. According to her vita on the NMSU
Graduate school website, Dr. Siepel has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1985 as well as
a Certified Fraud Examiner since 2007. These credentials make Dr. Seipel a very well rounded
accountant as well as a skilled academic professional, making New Mexico States Masters of
Accountancy Program very attractive.
The degree earned through the graduate school of New Mexico State is the Masters of
Accountancy degree (MAcc). This degree helps students earn the 150 required credit hours in

order to qualify to sit for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) Exam. One can strive to gain
these credits within their undergraduate career. However, the degree not only helps students
prepare better for this important exam that could dictate the future, but it also is very
attractive on a resume to future employers in the accounting field. New Mexico State
University has the highest CPA exam first time pass rate in the state (New Mexico State
University, 2 014).
New Mexico State not only has a very successful graduate accounting program, but it is
also one of the most inexpensive graduate schools to attend in the nation! According Dee
Barizo of the Accounting Degree Review lists NMSUs Masters of Accountancy Program as the
tenth most affordable program in United States. There are currently around 170 schools that
offer the MAcc degree.
In order to be accepted into the graduate school at NMSU, one must have or be
currently completing a bachelors degree. There are several prerequisite courses for the
program, including extensive classes in accounting and business. Also, students must have a
GPA of 3.5 or higher, or score well on the GMAT, in order to be accepted into the Masters of
Accountancy Program. If all these requirements are met, than the hardest part is completing
the graduate program!
