Ask a Chiropractic Sports Specialists

April 2015

A review of the injuries in

soccer provides some
interesting statistics for the
Chiropractic Sports Specialist:
-almost 50% of injuries
occurred to players younger
than 15 year of age
-the majority of injuries affect
the lower extremity
-GIRLS suffer more knee
injuries
-BOYS suffer more ankle
injuries
-CONCUSSIONS are prevalent
as a result of contact/collision
rather than heading the ball.

Question: Does my sons ankle

injury require an x-ray?
This is a very common question for the Chiropractic Sports
Specialist when assessing a young athlete, with an ankle sprain,
swelling, limited movement and an inability to weight bear. The
Ottawa Ankle Rules help determine, Do I take an x-ray or not ?
Prior to the use of the Ottawa Ankle Rules, a significant number of
patients with ankle sprains at Emergency would too often be xrayed only to prove negative for fracture. As a result many
unnecessary X-rays were taken, which was costly, time consuming
and exposed many patients to unnecessary radiation.
In the last 25 years, ample evidence has supported the Ottawa
Ankle Rules as an accurate tool for excluding fractures of the
ankle/foot and reducing the number of unnecessary x-rays. The
rules are straight forward for the Chiropractic Sports Specialist and
have a very high sensitivity and very low rate of false negatives.
Physical examination by a Chiropractic Sports Specialist, x-rays
will be recommended based on the following signs:

Inability to weight bear (walk four steps)

Tenderness within 6cm of medial/lateral malleolus
Tenderness of medial or lateral mid foot

Most injuries are classified as

minor and should respond to
RICE and up to 1 weeks rest
from soccer practice/games. If
longer than 1weekbook an
assessment.

Why spend hours at Emergency?
