Rogerian Response Activity: Health Care
Classical Oration
Exordium (Hook): 33% of hospital patients suffer some form of preventable harm during their
hospital stay.
Narrartio (thesis): In todays society aspects of the healthcare system are ignored because most
citizens are ignorant to key issues including changes that need to be done.
Partitio (thesis map): The nations healthcare system needs to be reformed because it is
dangerous, broken, and full of excessive waste.
Confirmatio (body Paragraphs): The healthcare system is dangerous because almost half of a
million Americans die each year due to preventable diseases in a hospital visit. Also, there is a
broken compartment between provider and patient because 92% of U.S. physicians admitted to
making some medical decisions based on avoiding lawsuits, as opposed to doing what is right for
the patient and not them. Lastly about 30 percent of healthcare costs are wasted a year on
healthcare

Refutation: Although 34 million caregivers have volunteered to help those in need, it does not fix
the problem needed to change the health care industry, but delays it.
Peroratio (conclusion): There are multiple sectors in the healthcare industry that need fixing. Not
only does it harm people but harms the nation as a whole. Preventing harm to patients and better
distributing of resources and reforms are the only way for a brighter America.

Introduction: In todays society healthcare is a key factor to keep citizens productive, efficient,
and hardworking members. Many issues are prevalent and need to be addressed for the sake of
an efficient society. The conflict present in our current state of the healthcare industry is wasted
resources, broken system, and dangerous to people. I understand that decisions must occur to
keep the system efficient, but at the same time cost effective. I fully recognize and support
everything, but in order to uphold changing times changing measures need to be allowed.
Contexts: The alternative position to keep the healthcare the same would work if society would
remain stagnant or decreasing population. In addition, under other circumstance the healthcare
system would remain efficient if only those in deep need came to caregivers.
Writers position: The benefits to reform healthcare would work if population increased and
more and more individuals needed treatment at health facilities. It would result in better
management of finite resources and less people suffering from preventable diseases.
Benefits to opponent: the death from half a million people would drop significantly. Also, the
waste of 30 percent of resources would go in other sectors of the healthcare industry. Lastly

health care professionals would face legal issues if they decide to withhold information from
patients on alternative treatments.
Arguments differ: approach of acknowledging other perspectives and alternatives to my claims.
It gives the arguer the perspective of the opponents mind. Classical gives more of an overview on
all the bases.
The Approach that would be better? Rogerian argument because healthcare is a touchy subject
and it emphasizes what the parties on both sides would gain from working with each other.
For audience? Rogerian would work better in politics because of both parties arguing two
different stand points they can agree to meet half way and at the same time see benefits from
working together.
