Comp J.3b Self-Assessment

Instructions: After reading, the NAA Competencies and Bringing Yourself to Work,
candidates will use the self-assessment tool to make a list of goals to strengthen their work
with youth. Candidates will write a reflective, personal philosophy of their role as a positive
teacher/mentor and how they have grown or what they have learned through the credential
courses.
This competency required the reading of the NAA Competencies and a self-assessment
which results caused deep reflection. The NAA Competencies reading had some much
information that I could use as I teach and train staff. There is something great about
having knowledge. Knowledge is power and that is how I feel as I learn more about what I
can do to better myself, my staff, and my programs. I bring myself to work all the time. I
tried to do my best and meet all expectations and deadlines. As a teacher, I tried to teach,
encourage, motivate, and inspire others to do better and meet their goals. As a mentor, I
tried to help, assist, and show how to do things. Frequently, I do self-evaluations and I am
very critical of myself. In the Self-Assessment Tool provided by this credential, my scores
were 67 for my ability to relate with others, 69 for my ability to relate to self-awareness,
and 70 for my ability to relate within a group setting. Without the scoring key, my thoughts
were geared towards I am terrible due to the low scores. However, as I read the score key,
I learned how accurate this self-assessment is and not negative at all. Both, ability to relate
to others and self-awareness were very good. However, my strongest was the ability to
relate within a group setting.
I believe there is always room for improvement. There is always something I can learn
from any given situation. Its up to me to have that open mind and allow situations or
people to impact my emotions in a positive or negative way. After using the self-assessment
tool, my goals to strengthen my work with youth are:

Identify and respond to children individual needs by using children portfolios and
parent-teacher conferences.

Create and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum. Currently working on

Y5201 and Food and Fun curriculums.

Create lessons that provide learning opportunities of self-awareness, inclusion and

diversity acceptance among children in my program.

Through this credential I learned how much I love my job and the impact I could have in
my program. I was able to applied learned material at work. For example, I have been able
to use the information and knowledge gained in staff meetings. In February, I used Half A
Childhood book as a reference and shared very useful information with my staff. In March,
I used some of the resources given to brainstorm ideas for redirecting children and behavior
management. After this credential, I am planning on continuing at WCTC seeking more
knowledge I could use strengthen my region.
