Discussion Questions
Inception seems significantly more devious and potentially dangerous where
extraction is easier because inception involves planting an idea in ones head
while dreaming through the many sublevels. Extraction is essentially just
stealing the idea in the dream. A simple idea can redefine another and
throughout the movie Cobb creates this idea that you could lose touch with
reality and create your own. So if one steals something from a dream it is lost,
where if you plant an idea in a dream it causes them to think and feel
differently emotionally and physically. And this is what they were trying to do
to Fischer. (1)
The fact that characters die in their dreams, and wake up but in pain with a
sense that it was real tells us that we do feel something.This apparent factor
lets us know that we do feel a sense of pain or emotion and or feeling in the
nature of our dreaming state and because of the experience when dreaming it
made it feel as if it were real. We put ourselves in realistic situations,
therefore making it feel so real. (2)
When in the deeper levels of dreaming (dreams within dreams, aided by
sedatives), dying does not wake us up, because instead one will plunge into
limbo. It means that one does not simply wake up from the deeper levels of
dreaming because they are dying, yet they are plunged into a limbo till they
realize that what they think or believe to be true isnt that they are only
dreaming and must except that before they can wake up. Like at the end of the
movie both Cobb and the other character realize that and they are then
awakened. (3)
The theory of dream time offered in the movie which was that every level
down involves telescoping which increases time, seems to create this idea that
the longer you are there the hard it is to leave what you built as a reality.
Because in the real world only hours pass, while in your dream years will take
the place of those few minutes and hours. You are stuck in this place where
you believe it is reality, and potentially you lose your track of time and sense
of existence and in the movie you could see that Leonardo Dicaprios character
was no longer content with what he knew was fake. (6)
For dreamers, the dreams become their reality- Who are we to say otherwise?
Comment- Like in the film, you realize that someone has to bring you back to
reality and the fact that you are just that- a dreamer. And when someone
thinks that what they are dreaming about is true and reality, they are lying to
themselves. They want things and a life that can never have, but one day they

will figure out that they can never really be content, no matter if what they
think is real or not. And for Leonardo Dicaprios character his wife was living in
this prison or cage because she was never able to let go of what she thought
was reality, which in the end was the death of her, to say the least. (7)
In the dream sequence, there are the two objects of Fischers in his fathers
safe, which was his will and the pinwheel. If this was my dream sequence, the
two objects that would be in that safe would probably be a rose and a picture
of my twin brother and I from when we were about two years old. Im sure
there would be many more but this two things are objects that always brings
memories and emotions from my childhood. There really arent any treasured
memory that would be above any of the others, because each moment for me
is a cherished memory that I would hope to keep and share with future
generations. These memories and moments are what define me and make me
who I am today. (14)
