Animal Testing
The use of animals for testing has contributed tremendously to curing
human diseases.
In so many ways it
is wrong and inhumane. No matter how you want to eliminate animal testing
it will not happen.
Animals are needed for the name of science and to further human beings in
their quest for
perfection. Animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures
and treatments, animals
must be used instead of humans, and relatively few animals are
used in research, which is a
small price to pay for advancing medical purposes.
California Biomedical Research Association stated that almost every
medical
breakthrough in the past 100 years was the result of using animals.
Experimentation on animals
help to discover insulin, vital in saving the lives of many diabetics. The polio
vaccine also tested
on animals help minimize the disease from 350,00 cases in 1988 to 223
cases in 2012 according
to Pamela Bass and The World Health Organization. The contribution of
animal research has
lead to understanding and treating many conditions like brain injury,
leukemia, malaria, and so

much more. Without the use of chimpanzees we wouldnt have the vaccine
for hepatitis B and
our best hope in finding a cure for hepatitis C is them stated by Chris Abee,
Director of the
University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Most people would say use
alternative
methods and what else is there? Using petri dishes, microchips, and
computer models do not
have the same desirable outcome that is needed.
For ethical reasons humans should not be used. Testing medicines for
toxicity in human
volunteers should not be place in danger when the use of animals is a better
alternative. It is

unethical in many ways to use humans when experiments involving genetic

manipulation is
involved rather than the use of animals. The World Medical Association
Declaration of Helsinki
states that human trials should be preceded by tests on animals.
Compared to animals being slaughtered for human consumption, few
animals are used
for research to advance medical progress. In United States we eat about 9
billion chickens and
150 million cattles, pigs, and sheep annually, yet we only use around 26
million animals for
research according to Tom Holder, The Hasting Center, and The Speaking of
Reasearch.
Animal testing has contributed to many significant medical advances.
Using animals as
test subjects is better than using human beings. Even though millions are
being tested to

advance medical purposes, it is a small number compared to how many are

being slaughtered
each day for human consumption. It is wrong and cruel but how else are we
going to find ways
to cure the diseases out there?
