I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or


Principle): Characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details will be
described.
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective): Students will describe characters, settings, and
major events in a story, using key details.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence): In the
previous lesson, students retold stories, including key details. In the next lesson, students
will identify words and phrases in stories that suggest feelings.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): Today class we will be reading one
of my favorite books, Miss Nelson Is Missing by Harry Allard. But before we read this
book together, let's go over some of the vocabulary words that we will find in this book.
(Words will be posted on a chart so that we as a class can read and go over). Why are
these words important? Why am I showing you these words before I read this story?
(Students will be given the opportunity to answer questions) while we read along I want
you to pay attention to these words, I would also like if you could listen to characters
names or anything important. Please pay attention to what is happening in the story.
Miss Nelson Is Missing by Harry Allard is read to the class.
Did you like this storyline? What was your favorite part of the story? Who was Miss.
Nelson? Where was she at? Who else was in this storyline? Where did this story take
place?
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student
Activities):

C. Step #1 Naming important characters in the story


a. In groups, the students will discuss the characters in the story. Why are they
important?
b. Teacher listens to the students responses.
Step #2 What happened to Miss. Nelson?
a. What happened when she wasnt there? Who was the class teacher? Was she
like Miss. Nelson?
b. Teacher will listen to students responses.
Step #3 Charting responses
a. In pairs, the students will discusses about what really happened to Miss
Nelson? Where did she go? What did the children feel when she came back to
class?
b. Teacher listens to responses and writes on the chart the name of the student
and their statement.
Step #4: Application Task/Formative Assessment
a. Students will complete Miss Nelson is missing worksheet.
b. Teacher collects and corrects worksheet.
Step #5: Summative Assessment
a. Students will make journal entries. Volunteers will read their journals to the class.
b. Teacher will collect journals to read later.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT- Draw pictures of the main characters in the story, draw
pictures comparing Miss Nelson and the substitute that came in to teach her class while
she was gone. Draw the students before Miss Nelson left and after she came back. Write
one sentence telling your favorite part of the story, using some of the vocabulary words.
