Standard 4: Diverse Learners

Title of Work Sample: Teaching at Platteville High School-Training Plan

Date Completed: Spring 2015

Work Sample Description:

During my level 1 internship in the spring semester of 2015 I had to create a
training plan and workout. The main focus of my training plan was designed for a full
body yoga class. This workout was held at the Platteville High School which involved
students from the junior and senior class.

Health Promotion Standard Alignment:

The standard I felt best aligned with this artifact was Standard 4, Diverse
Learners: The health promoter understands how clients differ in their approaches to
learning and creates a variety of education/training methods that are adapted to diverse
learners. Because it required me to create a learning environment that depends on the
students participation during the session in order to keep them engaged.Having to
design and implement a workout to a public school physical education class can be
difficult because it had to meet the needs of the diverse population. The activity does
not have to change but making modifications to each specific exercise so every student
is able to participate in the yoga session. I made sure to show modifications to all of my
yoga poses which allowed me to be successful with conducting my workout while
knowing that all individuals were able to participate to the best of their ability.

Health and Human Performance Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition

Alignment:
KSD.1.e. Design Coherent Instruction:
The candidate, with appropriate client input, has the ability to develop relevant,
goal-directed, engaging, clear, and varied learning activities that progress coherently
and produce a unified instructional setting that reflects recent professional research. I
feel this artifact bests aligns with this KSD because I clearly presented a yoga workout
to a diverse group of young student in an environment I wasnt used to. I made sure to
include modifications for all of my yoga poses which made the workout successful
because I was ensured that all the students were participating to the best of their ability.
Having the students engaged during the entire training session was my ultimate goal so
making modifications and clearly explaining my instructions to the student helped me
achieve these goals. I achieved this goal by communicating clearly to the students and
providing a clear yoga workout with modifications.

What I learned about teaching/training from this experience:

What I have learned about teaching/training from this experience is that its
important to know the skills and abilities of individuals who I will be working with
throughout my career. This experience has allowed me to gain confidence in earning my
clients attention. I also learned how important it is to be able to provide my clients/
students with a diverse learning environment. Being able to evaluate future clients and
apply appropriate instructions and modifications for them will help me with my future
successes. I will provide the students with the same instructions and opportunities but
modify it to diverse individuals, and this will be a big key factor in my teaching and
training in the future.

What I learned about myself as a prospective health promotion specialist

as a result of this experience:
What I learned about myself as a health promotion specialist from this
experience is, that I enjoy working with older individuals rather than younger individuals.
It is difficult to teach when the students get easily distracted and sometime tend to get
off topic. It is important for me to be able to communicate with all of my clients because
everyones backgrounds are diversely different. I also would prefer to work with groups
of individuals who are similar in their physical ability. I feel that I did a good job keeping
the students engaged during the entire time of my workout. I also feel that I did a good
job applying modifications to all yoga possess for diverse individuals like going from
straight leg push-up position to modified push-up position on the persons knees as a 90
degree angle. Being proficient with this standard alignment will help benefit me as a
health promotion specialist.
