Philosophy of Education Statement

Through the LBS courses I have taken at California State University Dominguez Hills
and personal experiences in the classroom, I have acquired my own philosophy of education
which I plan to implement into my future classroom. The purpose of education is to improve
your way of life and become a model citizen in the community. An education provides students
with a system of set ideas and not necessarily to prepare them for a specific job (Freeman). I
believe that an education is a key role in societys progress. Without an education, it would be
very difficult to achieve any advancements. We educate children for many reasons. One
already mentioned is so that children can grow up and support themselves. We want our children
to be able to think for themselves, be responsible citizens, help others, and hope when they
become adults or parents, they have the skills they need to be successful.
Children learn best in a welcoming, positive, and healthy environment. It is important for
students to feel safe in their environment so they can learn and grow. According to Maslows
Hierarchy of Needs chart, children cannot learn until all psychological and safety needs are
met. For example, if I had a child who was hungry because food is not abundant at home, the
child will not be able to learn until certain needs are met. This will help me create great learning
conditions by making sure to keep healthy snacks in the classroom to avoid these situations. I
plan to establish a set routine from the beginning of the school year and keep it going from start
to end of class. Not only does this give students structure but helps me as a teacher to not
constantly remind them what is expected each morning when they walk into the classroom.

I also want to establish an environment where all of my students feel comfortable being
in. Teasing and making fun of one another will not be tolerated in my classroom. Risa Sodi
states Students may perceive that they do not belong in the classroom setting, a feeling that
can lead to decreased participation, feelings of inadequacy, and other distractions. I believe that
it is the instructors duty to make sure that students never feel excluded from the classroom. All
children deserve to feel safe and I will not let their peers ruin that for them. If students do not
feel comfortable or something is bothering them, it will make it difficult to focus on their school
material. When children feel good about themselves, it can contribute to having an excellent
learning condition. All students deserve equal access to educational resources no matter their
race, color, or national origin. According to the United States Department of Education, all
students have equal access to the school resources that they not only deserve, but are their right
under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As a future educator I want to make sure that all
students have the same accessibility. For example, having students come in in the morning
before or after school to use the computers or give one on one help with homework. If a child
needs more help beyond my means, I will refer them to tutoring or Saturday school with the
consent and support of their parents.
All children are capable of learning. It is important to know that not all children learn the
same way and teachers need to figure out what method works best with what student. It can be
frustrating with a classroom of 20 to 25 (or even more) students yet the results are rewarding. I
work as a teachers assistant at an elementary school and have witnessed the various cognitive
levels. For example, the instructor gives me a group of five students who are not in their reading
grade level. I work with them in a timely manner and focus more on syllables and high
frequency words. As a group, we break a word into syllables and sound out each part. A word

that students have a lot of trouble is with. We all clap once to the one syllable. The first
sound is /w/, second sound is /i/, and last sound is the special sound /th/. I write each sound as
they hear it on the board and I have them say it three times. I have learned that students often
misspell words because they mispronounce them in their everyday language. It is important for
me and other teachers to properly pronounce words correctly so students do not keep making the
same mistakes. Children learn best in a welcoming, positive, and healthy environment.
I believe that what I teach is for the benefit for each and every student in my classroom.
Overall, I hope to teach my students that: they can all learn, all students will be treated fairly,
learning should be fun, diversity is welcomed, and all children will be given praise and
recognition of what they have earned and deserve. Structure will be stressed each day by having
my agenda written on the board with set times. My students will always know what comes next.
It is imperative that I keep organized, especially if I will be teaching multiple subjects. English,
reading, writing, and mathematics are to be taught every day at a set time. Mathematics should
be taught with visuals for hands on learning. Sending homework every day for practice is very
important so the student can retain information. Jeremy Michael Sanchez states instructors
should consider students socioeconomic-driven factors and personal needs in order to form a
proper educational plan. I agree with Sanchez because all students come from different
backgrounds and they all learn differently. For example, when teaching math, it is important to
use manipulatives because math can be complicated without manipulatives. Many students are
visual learners and need the extra help.
Teaching is full of challenges, frustrations, and responsibilities. I believe, however, that it
can also be very rewarding. All students are capable of learning and as a future educator, it is my
responsibility to figure out what methods work best for each individual. I intend to motivate

students while teaching them to be fundamentally motivated through challenging yet supportive
lessons and assignments. My personal goal for my future classroom is to challenge students and
watch them grow to their full potential. Sometimes it can be a struggle, but if something goes
wrong, there is always a way to fix the problem. No matter what, there is always the power to
make a change. I want my students to have freedom that allows for expression and creativity. It
is their right to express themselves and let their personalities shine. From my educational
experiences, I know how valuable teacher encouragement and motivation is for personal drive.
Students love to be reminded and rewarded through their triumphs, it keeps them motivated and
continue trying their best. I believe it is also important to help students develop their social and
interaction skills, and will do this with group work and activities. Having an exposure to group
work is also a great way to learn from one another. As a future educator, I believe my
philosophy and teaching styles may change throughout my teaching career and I want to remain
receptive to suggestions and open for improvement. A teacher can never stop learning.
