The Levels of Organization:

We have learned that cells are the smallest unit of a living thing. We are
multicellular organisms and have many cells in our body. Cells have different sizes,
shapes, and do different things; however, cells of a particular kind work together on
a job. The cells that are the same kind as each other join together and make up
tissues. There are many different kinds of tissues, however, they can join together
to develop organs, which work together to do a specific job. A group of organs
form an organ system that carries out a job. Organ systems depend on each other
in order to help an organism function. An organism is like a machine in a way that
if one of its organ systems does not work properly, other organ systems and the
machine itself, (the organism) may not function properly.
These are the Levels of Organization of Living Things!

Directions: With your partner, read the short passage below.

After
reading, draw the diagram at the bottom of this page on a sheet of poster
paper. Then, fill out diagram with the information you learned in the
passage about the levels of organization. Give specific examples from the
reading about the cells, tissues, organs, and an organ system which are
important to the survival of organisms like YOU! (Write your names on the
front of your poster.)

The Skeletal System:

The skeletal system is an organ system that is made up of 206 bones and
structures that connect bones to each other or to muscles. At the cellular level,
bones are made up of bone cells, which together form bone tissues. The skeletal
system gives you shape and support, allows you to move, and makes blood cells.
The skeletal system also protects inner, softer organs. An example would be that
our skull protects our brain, and also our ribs protect our lungs.

Muscular System:
The organ system called the muscular system is made up of three
kinds of muscles: skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscles.
Our muscles are organs that help our body in many different ways.
When we want to kick a soccer ball, our skeletal muscles attached to
our bones work by contracting (tightening), and moving the bones in our leg
to kick the ball and make a goal. The skeletal muscle organs are made up of
a group of skeletal muscles tissues.
When we eat a huge hamburger, our smooth muscles help by
contracting to move our food down to our stomach. These smooth muscles
tissues are organs that are composed of smooth muscle tissues.
The third organ found in the muscular system is cardiac muscle. We
can tell by its name where this muscle tissue is located, the cardiac muscle:
the heart. Cardiac muscles made of cardiac muscle tissues and nerve
tissues, are what help your heart to pump blood through our bodies by
contracting and relaxing.

Nervous System:
The nervous system is an extremely important organ system in organisms. Your
nervous system controls all of the functions in your body. At a cellular level, nerve
cells form nerve tissues, which make up two of the main organs that are in the
nervous system: spinal cord and brain. The nervous system sends nerve cells from
your brain, down your spinal cord, which signals to areas of body. When these
signals reach a part of the organisms body, an action of the body is carried out. For
example, in order to use your leg muscles to kick a soccer ball, nerve cells from
your brain must travel down your spinal cord to send a message to your leg muscles
to contract, causing your leg to move and kick the ball.
Nerve signals from your brain also help your body to perform tasks that we
dont even think about doing such as breathing, our heart beating, and moving food
and blood throughout our bodies. Lastly, when nerve tissues sense a change in our
environment, nerve cells head up spinal cord to our brain to recognize and respond
to the environment. Our nervous system helps you see, hear, taste, smell, and feel.

on each other in order to help an organism function. An organism is like a machine
in a way that if one of its organ systems does not work properly, other organ
systems and the machine itself, (the organism) may not function properly.
These are the Levels of Organization of Living Things!

Directions: With your partner, read the short passage below.

After
reading, draw the diagram at the bottom of this page on a sheet of poster
paper. Then, fill out diagram with the information you learned in the
passage about the levels of organization. Give specific examples from the
reading about the cells, tissues, organs, and organ system which are
important to the survival of organisms like YOU! (Write your names on the
front of your poster.)

We have learned that cells are the smallest unit of a living thing. We are
multicellular organisms and have many cells in our body. Cells have different sizes,
shapes and do different things; however, cells of a particular kind work together on
a job. The cells that are the same kind as each other join together and make up
tissues. There are many different kinds of tissues, however, they can join together
to develop organs, which work together to do a specific job. A group of organs join
together and form an organ system that carries out a job. Organ systems depend
on each other in order to help an organism function. An organism is like a machine
in a way that if one of its organ systems does not work properly, other organ
systems and the machine itself, (the organism) may not function properly.
