English Language and Literature (RJELAL)
In the article The Journey: Beginning and End, Sheme Mary examines
different connotations of the theme of journey as presented by different poets of
different period. Mary argues that Emily Dickinsons journey of death, Because I could
not stop for Death is supported by theory of fantasy, where she compares Death as a
Suitor" than a hard reality, and is excited about life after death. Frosts The Road Not
Taken applies theory of realism, it has presented journey as an exciting adventure
towards unknown regions. Whereas, Thom Gunns On the Move and Larkins Aubade,
are supported by theory of existentialism, in which their journey depends upon mans
power and will to move. Marys article proves useful in understanding different
interpretations and levels of journey. Though the source is limited and objective, it could
be improved upon if Mary incorporated more insight into the issues of journey. Marys
article helps a reader to understand various expressions of the journey, that is, often
from life to death, from known to unknown regions, from passivity to movement, and
lastly, from present to the future. The article is useful for the research students to give
them a basic idea that the word journey can have manifold interpretations as
presented differently by different poets.
