What is Earth Day?

So what is Earth Day? I mean, we all know it involves

the earth, hence the name Earth Day, but what is it
really? Turns out that Earth day is a worldwide event
held to demonstrate support for environmental
protection. In other words, to help keep our planet
clean and healthy and to make our planet able to live
on. Its also to help protect the animals that live here
from getting sick and dying. Or in other cases,
choking and dying. You see, near 100,000 sea
animals die from our litter each year. So this day is
dedicated to helping those animals who are sick and
who might get sick because of our litter that we
carelessly throw out.

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970. Really, it truly started on march 21 st, and it
was the original earth day until U.S.A founded a new one. It happened to start on
a Wednesday, and it symbolized everyones care for our earth and everything on
it.
Earth Day began in New York and Philadelphia, with the same celebration theme
in mind. It is now celebrated in 175 countries with more than 5 million people
celebrating this event.

What are some examples of ways people are

celebrating Earth Day this year in America?
(news10.net)

Well, people here in Florida are celebrating it by holding a festival called the
Florida Earth festival. Also, our president, Barack Obama, is visiting the
everglades here. I know what my family will be doing for Earth Day. We will
recycle and pick up all of our trash around our house, yard, and front lawn. We
will be cleaning everything that could possibly pose a threat to our
environment.
The people in Germany are celebrating it by holding garbage collection
campaigns and tree planting. They are actually celebrating Earth Day for the
first time! I cant imagine the peoples excitement. I know that I would be
excited!
My grandparents are celebrating it up in Idaho by recycling all the stuff that
they have that needs to be recycled but thats really all I know.

How is Orlando celebrating Earth Day this

year?
(yelp and DowntownOrlando.com, also earthday.org/2015)

We are holding a festival in central Florida with food preparation demonstrations,

environmental education, humane education, Earth kids zone, artist corner, animal
haven, and music on band and acoustic stages. This is taking place at Lake Eola and I
hope that people will come to celebrate.
We hope that this will inspire sustainable, humane, healthy, and equitable decisions
at all levels, from the individual and local levels to the corporate, governmental and
international levels. If I couldve gone to this, I would have. I know that this would be
so much fun for my friend and I to visit!
Another thing that we are doing is taking action to help the earth. We are planting
new trees and shrubs, growing flowers to help bring back nature. We also have
programs for kids and adults who are interested in saving our earth.

What are three environmental issues we are

facing in America today? (Be sure to include at
least 5 FACTS about each issue.)
(dosomething.org, ehow.com, www.nwf.org)
1.

Pollution-

. Is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people
. Almost 40% of Americas lakes are to polluted to have any kinds of life living in them
. Cleanup can save animals lives and discourage people from littering in the future
. Over 1 million seabirds die from pollution each year
. 100,000 sea mammals are killed a year because of pollution
2. Global Warming. Global temperatures by 2009 have risen 1.4 degrees F in the past century
. Humans have contributed to global warming for years
. Between 1997 and 2008, the 10 warmest years in recorded human history occurred
. Temperature in the polar ice caps have risen greatly
. Animals in the polar ice caps are running out of their habitat that they call home and they have less time to
survive

3. Habitat Loss
. Habitat loss is one of the
greatest ways for the
economy for animals to
decrease
. Destroying animal habitats
actually just destroys some
of what we have that is
important
. Land conversions for
development is one way to
decrease animal habitats
. If we end up destroying all
the natural qualities of
earth, then we will be
affected by the change; we
might get so polluted we
cant breathe, and we
might ruin oxygen from
cutting down to many
trees.
. There are three different
kinds of habitat loss:
habitat destruction, habitat
fragmentation, and habitat
degradation.

Which environmental issue today do you

feel is most important for us to
address/fix? Why?(global warming.org)
I feel that the greatest environmental issue is global
warming. I feel this because global warming is causing
animals to lose their habitats. If we lose animals, then we
lose our economy. After all, we need animals to live. Also,
flooding may happen in places near the polar caps. Who
knows, it may even travel all the way to a humid place like
Florida. Flooding damages many things, such as houses,
cars, buildings, and other things that are important to us. If
we stopped global warming, I believe the world will be in
peace and we wont have to worry about saving our economy
from dangers. We also wouldnt have to worry about animals
invading places that they shouldnt be invading.

What can you do in your daily life to make

a difference in our environment?

Well, for starters, I can recycle things like plastic

containers and recycle trash that I see lying about
where some careless environmental-hater left out for
animals to choke on or to get sick on. I could also
gather some of my friends and create a cleaning
activity at one of my favorite places in town or a place
that needs cleaning up because theres so much trash
and debris. I would definitely clean around the house

and the yard to make things look nicer, to. When I am com
older, I would like to be and environmental conserver.
That would make me feel better about myself knowing
that I am helping the earth breathe a little easier.
