The following is a sample of the lesson plan format used by the University.
Lesson Topic/Focus:
Date:
24/11/2014
AusVELS Domain(s):
Mathematics
Year level(s):
Lesson duration:
50mins
AusVELS sub-strand(s):
Teaching focus:
Keep students focused on the task.
Background to the learning:
A.
References for teacher background knowledge
Researched lessons and cross referenced with AusVELS.
B.
Identify students current knowledge
2 previous lessons on capacity taught by myself. Students learnt the difference between mls and litres and how to
convert the two. Fist measurement lesson this year.
Lesson resources:
Student workbooks
Rulers (must contain both cm and mm)
Lesson content:
A.
Introduction
5-10 mins
To tune students into the maths lesson have students write in their maths books how many litres they think their swimming
pool where they have school lessons is. Have them bring their books to the floor and tell them the pool is 330,000 cubic litres.
Explain that one cubic meter also equals 1000 liters.
B.
Development
15-20 mins
Then ask students what this the difference is between cm and m. 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters. Ask students why they
think we might calculate some things in m and others in cm. have students give examples. Ask for tools that we can measure
cm and m in.
C.
10-15 mins
Split students into pairs. Have students write in their books an estimation of a school object then they must measure it. E.g
tables, pencil, glue stick, scissors.
D.
Closure
10 mins
Have students come back to the floor and share things they measured. Did they all get the same results? Why/why not? Did
we meet the success criteria this lesson? Why / why not? If not how could we change the lesson to meet the criteria?
Lesson/activity transition:
Students can eat lunch before going to swimming.
