Governor Mark Dayton is Acting Irresponsibly

Legislative Leaders Must Stand Up To Him
St. Paul, MN Governor Mark Daytons veto of the E 12 Education bill
is uncalled for and irresponsible. Legislative leaders should not give in
to his tactics.
Senator Thompson stated, In the final days of the 2015
legislative session the Republican controlled House and Democratic
controlled Senate passed the omnibus Education Finance Bill. Over
60% of members voted for the bill, including 91 Republicans and 32
Democrats. A truly bipartisan effort.
Nevertheless, the Governor vetoed the bill because he didnt
get everything he wanted. He now states that public school for fouryear-olds was his number one priority during this past session.
However, he didnt win anyone over. There are 101 Democrats in the
legislature. Democrats control every Senate committee, yet the
Governor couldnt even get one committee vote on his proposal!
So I guess the Governor believes he can get his way by
dragging out the business of the legislature and taking our school
children hostage. And for what purpose? To pay back the education
union bosses for their political support. Parents are not crying out to
send their four-year-olds to school on a bus full of older children (in
some cases high school age children). Our school boards and
administrators are telling the Governor they dont have the capacity,
systems, or staff to handle the new workload. And childcare providers
will be devastated by the Governors program.
House Speaker Kurt Daudt (R Crown) and Senate Majority
Leader Tom Bakk (DFL Cook) should stand strong against the
Governor. They should tell him that when he calls a special session,
the same bill will be passed and sent to him again. The Governor is
acting like the schoolyard bully. Legislative leaders need to do
something that apparently the governors parents never did they
need to tell him no. I hope theyre up to the task.
Senator Thompson is available for comment.

Senator Dave Thompson represents District 58, located in the South
