Thequestionofwhetherornotafelonwhohasservedhis/hertimeshouldbeableto
voteisanimportantonethatisworththedebate.IntheUnitedStatesifyouareborninthis
countryifyouarebornhereyouareconsideredacitizen,nowthereareotherwaysyoucould
becomeacitizen,buttheisbesidesthepoint.IfyoureanexconwithintheUnitedStatesyou
havetherighttomarry,havechildren,buyalcohol,ownproperty,anddrive.Yetyouarenot
allowedtherighttovoteforwhoournationsrepresentativeswillbe.

Everyoneknowsthatthereare50statesintheUs,butwhatpeopledon'tknowiswhat
hevotingpoliciesarewithinthestatesforexcons.Therearetwostateswhoallowtheirconvicts
tovotewhileincarcerated,thereare13statesthatrestoretheirconvictsvotingprivilegesafter
theirsentenceiscompleted,Therearefourstateswhorestorethevotingprivilegeaftertheir
termisservedandadditionalparoletimeisserved(Californiabeingoneofthem).Thereare20
statestherestorethevotingprivilegesaftertheirtermisservedwithbothaddedparoleand
probationtime,andfinallytheresanastounding11statesthatmayhavetheirfelonslosetheir
righttovotecompletely(dependingonthecrimecommitted,timeserved,andothervariables).
Nowallofthatisalotofinformationtotakein,butconsiderthis,thosemenandwomenwhoare
havingtheirrighttovoterevokedhavenosayinwhotheirowncountriesleadersare.Theyare
consideredtobelikechildrenandarementallyincompetentandnottobetrustedwith
somethingasimportantasasayinwhichcandidateshouldbeelectedtowhateveroffice.

Thesespeopleareborncitizens(orbecomecitizens)whowill,whentheybecomeof
age,willbeabletodeterminewhowillrunthisgreatcountry,andtherighttovoteshouldbe
consideredanunalienableone.Somethingthatcannotbetakenaway,theirvoteshouldbe
somethingtobeheardbynotonlytheirstate,buttheircountry.Intheeighthamendmentit
clearlysaysthatexcessivesanctionsaretobeprohibitedandthateverycrimethatiscommitted
istobemetwithaproperpunishmentthatisequivalentoftheseverityofthecrimecommitted.
Thatbeingsaidthestatesthatprohibitfelonstovoteevenaftertheirtermisservedcanbe
consideredunconstitutionalandunjustbecauseofwhatisstatedwithintheeighthamendment.

Inconclusiontherighttovoteshouldbeapermanentonethatwouldbeenforcedbythe
federalgovernmentandnotthestate.Thisissimplybecausethereisnorealharminletting
felonsvote,theymaynotbeaseducatedasothers(justanassumptionandthisisnot
necessarilytrue)butthatdoesnotmeanthattheylacktheabilitytomakedecisionsaboutwho

shouldbeappointedforaparticularoffice.Itisunderstandabletotakevotingawaytemporarily
whilethefelonisimprisonedorservingasentence,butassoonasthatsentenceisovertheir
righttovoteshouldberestoredinfull.Votingasitisissomethingwheretheoverallturnoutis
nottoogreat,soifweweretoallowfelonstovotethenatleastwewouldhaveahighervoter
turnout.
