Job Description
Medical doctors examine, diagnose and treat patients. Medical
doctors can specialize in any area they want, such as pediatrics,
anesthesiology, etc... Or they can just stay as a general practice
physician. Medical doctors diagnose patients with conditions with
examinations and tests. When they find what is wrong, they can
prescribe treatment and medication to try and heal the illness or
injury.

Monitor a patients response to drugs
Modify drugs and dosages

Work Setting
The hours you work vary on where you work, whether you work in the
ICU, a hospital or a clinic, your hours will vary. If you work in a clinic you
wont work as much as if you worked in the emergency room because
you wouldnt have to work late hours. However; doctors work an
average of 54 hours per week.
A Doctor has a very high stress level staring from dealing with patients
to paper work.
A doctor can work in a clinic in the hospital, in the ICU, in prisons,
basically anywhere.
A doctor would not have to travel unless it is to go to a different hospital
to help out but if they dont want to they dont really have to travel.

Personal Characteristics
Medical doctors should have effective communication skill and build trust with the patient.
Doctors should know how to make good use of their time and to be able to work with what they have.
Doctors should have the ability to work in teams and know whats best for the patient.
A doctor should be confidence because their confidence should give the patient confidence too.
They should also be empathetic and understand what the patient is feeling, physically and emotionally.
The doctor should also be respectful, by respecting the patients privacy and taking every situation seriously.
Collaboration and cooperation is key because you are working in teams.
A doctor should be forthright, a doctor should tell you what you need in plain language and in a forthright manner so the
patient understand what you are saying.
When doctors give advise it should be unbiased and free from prejudice, so the patient feels comfortable sharing their
opinions with them.
A doctor should also be skilled, not just book smart but they should use evidence, to make the patient feel more trust in the
doctor.
I think this career fits my personality because I love caring for people and helping others feel better, this career provides
personal values that are important to me, such as being respectful and caring and understanding others.

Educational Requirements

High school classes that would be good to get prepared for this career are; Human Anatomy, math, biology, chemistry, physics
etc.

In college you should study biology, English and chemistry and your gpa should stay above a 3.5.

To become a doctor you must earn a 4 years undergraduate degree, and you must begin with a bachelors degree program.

You then have to pass the MCAT which is a Medical college admission test which shows what you know about medicine.

You then attend Medical school for 4 years, you then complete training, which lasts up to 2 years which is called you residency
program in which you work with patients but not as a full time doctor , you have to be under supervision of a physician and then
you get licensed.

A school in Wisconsin that lets you get your residency is UW- WhiteWater

Out of State schools are Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University and University of Notre Dame.

Wages & Benefits


A doctors begins to earn $120,000 a year once they gain experience and years
in the medical field they then get raised to $190,000 a year.
The worker will receive insurance, depends on where they work, to figure out
how much it covers.
Doctors can get vacation days they just have to make sure someone cover
their shift but they do get paid sick days and vacation days.
The amount of debt for medical school is a lot, and the amount that a doctor
makes is a lot but with the amount of debt is a lot more but if you know how to
use your money wisely, you can make it work. The amount a doctor makes is
what I expected but the amount of debt wasnt really what I expected.
In Rockford, IL they make $186,305 which is above national average, while in
Milwaukee, WI they make below national average which is $173,768.
In Green Bay, WI they make $172,601 which is also below average , in Saint
Paul, MN they make $193,806 which is above national average.

Employment Outlook

The job outlook for medical doctors is 18%, which is faster than average and it is
expected to be good from 2012-2022

Employment of physicians is expected to grow 18%

Personal Assessment

I think that this career is right for me because I love working with people and helping
others. I enjoy caring for others and helping others feel better. I think that having a
positive attitude towards what you are doing and having passion for what you do is
very important. I really value respect, I think that everyone should respect each other
and each others value and a doctor does exactly that, they respect peoples privacy
and their own values. I think that is a very key thing in being in the health care field is
caring for others and helping others feel better. I really enjoy learning about the
mysteries of the body and how everything in the body works and its functions.
