Title of Lesson: Monster Puppet
Grade Level: 2nd-3rd grade
Anticipated Time Needed for the entire Lesson: 1 class period
Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Enduring Understanding: Artists and designers experiment with forms, structures,
materials, concepts, media, and art-making approaches.
Essential Question: How do artists and designers learn from trial and error?
Content Area Standards:
2nd grade- Experiment with various materials and tools to explore personal interests in a
work of art or design.
3rd grade- Create personally satisfying artwork using a variety of artistic processes and
materials
Outcome(s)- Learning Targets
Students Can:
Create monster puppet out of a paper bag.
Brief Description of Lesson
Teacher will start out teaching the students about puppets. Teacher will show
students how you can create a puppet out of lots of things (your hand, a sock, paper bag,
popsicle stick). Teacher will pass out brown paper bags and pass out construction paper.
Teacher will show the anatomy of a puppet (mouth, face). Then students will make their
own monsters.

Scope and Sequence (Ordered Flow of Lesson)

1. Students will enter the classroom and be asked to sit boy-girl-boy-girl.


2. Students will be asked what a puppet is
3. Teacher will show students how puppets can be made out of lots of different
things (your hand, sock, popsicle stick, brown paper bag)
4. Teacher will show the students the anatomy of the puppet (mouth, face).
5. Teacher will show different examples of different monsters.
6. Teacher will tell students they can pick a monster from the examples to do or, can
create their own monster.
7. Teacher will call up individual students (based on behavior) to pick the color bag
of their choice.
8. Students will also be told to grab construction paper and glue when they are called
up.
9. Teacher will tell students to put their names on the inside of the bags
10. Teacher will show students how to use their puppet
11. Students will clean up. (Students will walk work to the drying rack, and pick up
markers and glue).
Behavior Management:
1, 2, 3 eyes on me 1, 2, eyes on you. (Voices turn off)
Tootsie rolls and lollypops. We were talking now were not. (voices turn off)
If a student is being disruptive with students around him/her they will be moved
the private desk.
Lights off, mouths off
Freeze!!
Es are not to sit by each other.

Assessment
Students will be assessed on their use and understanding of the materials to create
the puppet.
Accommodations:
Provide accommodations for A. as discussed with Miss D: Provide his
own space and a bag of toys and supplies to occupy him.
Place a gate at the classroom door to deter A. from running out
unsupervised.
Jehovah witness in class (no holidays, government, flags)
Be aware of any specific disabilities and individual student needs relating to cognitive,
physical or cultural barriers. Note adaptations.
