animal sanctuary & eco-retreat

Brisk Recovery!
Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary and Eco-Retreat is well known
for giving abused, unwanted and neglected animals a second
chance at life. Every animal has a unique story of its arrival, but one
in particular tugs at the heartstrings of BMASER. After harness racing
for three years, Brisk lived as a draft animal for a farming community
for 15 years. When he developed severe back deformities, as well as
arthritis of his back and legs, the community deemed him unable to
work and dumped him at a kill pen, as they do with all animals that
are worked beyond their limits.
Brisk lucked out. Horse slaughter is illegal, yet $64 million was
made in 1996 when 38 million pounds of horse, donkey and mule
meat was exported, according to the United States Department of
Agriculture. Not all horses are saved, but Burleigh Manor has taken
strides to make an impact on this illegal and ethically wrong industry.
As Burleigh Manors biggest and canniest equine, Brisk is a
20-year-old Standardbred that astonishes visitors with his ability to
unlock stall doors from the inside and wander into the pasture. Dr.

Be A Part Of The
91 Percent!
Providing quality care and
rehabilitation is not a cheap task, so
Burleigh Manor depends heavily on
donations. Approximately 91 percent
of revenue is generated from corporate
and individual donations that are put
toward feed and veterinary care, which
made up half of BMASERs expenditures
in 2014. Be a part of that 91 percent and

Never tried vegan food? The Great Sage Benefit

is the day to venture to Clarksville and try it out!
Eating organic and sustainable food is how to
preserve the soil for our future,
says Scott Carberry, general
manager of the organic animalfriendly restaurant Great Sage.
We believe plant-based food is
creative, flavorful and satisfying.
With the opportunity to dine

and the planet we all share, says Carberry. Whether

vegan or not, Great Sage offers delicious dishes
that anyone can enjoy. Bringing more than 30 years
of experience in the culinary
field, Carberry works alongside
executive chef Adam Pierce, who
has 14 years of experience, to
bring diners a unique meal.
Great Sage hosts fundraisers
for local charities in support of
the community and donates
a portion of the sales to that
organization. BMASER will be the
star of the show at Great Sage
June 28 from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. with
hopes to raise money for the
animals and continue awareness
that they are the only sanctuary
in the county to house farm animals.

It Only Gets Better With Burleigh!

Calling all wine enthusiasts! Burleigh Manor is hosting
its Second Annual Wine and Cheese Tasting to promote
wine from BMASERs wine cellar. The featured
cheese will be Smoked Coconut Milk Gouda and
will pair nicely with our pinot noirs, says Davis.
All the cheese is made to showcase animalfriendly products. As more people are becoming
animal and environmentally friendly, vegan
cheese producers have evolved into making
their products taste like the real deal. Rather
than using the milk from animals, the cheesemaking starts with grinding the nuts with water and
then separating out the solids to make almond milk,
says Kite Hill, a company dedicated to animal-friendly
products, in an article with the National Public Radio. At that

as dairy cheese-making. BMASERs wine and cheese
tasting will not only open visitors eyes to the up-and-coming world
of vegan products, but also show the local wines that pair perfectly.

The tasting will be held on the lawn and will accompany tours of
the farm and animals. The visitor center will open for the purchase
of Burleigh Manor merchandise, quince jelly and the opportunity to
receive a postcard for Adopt-an-Animal. Nothing pairs better with
giving animals a second chance than wine and cheese at BMASER
on August 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.!

In honor of an avid animal lover

As the only farm animal sanctuary in Howard
County, Md., BMASER fills the void that has been
needed for so long. Dr. Lisa M. Davis was inspired
to open the sanctuary in her mothers honor.
Margaret (Peggy) Davis was an avid animal lover and
amazing caregiver to her own animals, says Davis.
All my parents friends would say they wanted to be
reincarnated into one of Peggy Davis pets because
it was a standing joke that the animals were treated
better than my father and I were. The mission of
BMASER has always been to provide a home for

and goats.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and located in the heart of the historic old
mill town of Ellicott City, Md., the federal-style manor house was built in 1802 with recent additions of the
clubhouse and barn within the past decade.

What is Lisa Davis most excited for this year,
you may ask? She believes by holding the Great
