During Reading
After Reading
Before we start reading, it is important to think about our purpose. Do you remember what my purp
Polar Bears is? (student response) Thats right- I want to learn about Polar Bears so I know as much
when I go to Alaska. (write this down on the board)
I have two books about Polar Bears, I will read a section of each. (write down the titles under the pu
with a line between each) What I want you to help me with is to fill in the information that we get f
can decide which one is a better book to read for my purpose.
Read the first passage, modeling strategies used to get information from text and illustration. Ideall
oh I see the polar bear is on ice in this picture, so this book is telling me they like to be on ice? Wh
the picture?
Do the same for the nonfiction, this time modeling nonfiction strategies (important words are highli
pictures)
Write down what you learn from each book under each title
Compare the two. Ask students which book provided the most information. Discuss how nonfiction
information that you could use, and that the fiction book gave you information, but it was more for
noticed that the nonfiction book gave us direct information, when the fiction story gave us more ind
to dig a little deeper. The nonfiction author didnt tell us a lot of information directly in the storys t
skills of inferring to find a lot of the information.
Talk about the purpose for reading fiction and nonfiction (to learn vs. for entertainment)
Tell students that they will be practicing this skill with partners. Give each partner group 2 books on
fiction and one non-fiction. Ask them to fill out what information they find from each book on the w
pictures and text to find information.
3. Closure What did the students learn from this lesson? 5 minutes
Today we learned about how different books can be used for different purposes, and
some of the main differences between fiction and nonfiction. When you are choosing
books to read for independent reading, consider your purpose for reading before you
choose a book. If you want to learn about a subject, the best book for you is probably
A. Assessment-Did your students understand the lesson? What was you evidence?
Are students able to find one piece of meaningful information from the images and
text in both the fiction and nonfiction book? Are they able to determine the purpose
for Steps-Based
reading nonfiction
vs. fictionwhat
text?
B. Next
on your assessments
do you need to work on next meeting?
The next focus would be on finding information within nonfiction text to meet specific
needs (each group given a research question, and would be required to find books that
would help them answer the question)
C. Back Pocket Idea
Have students find different fiction and nonfiction books (or other text, such as newspapers, magazines) at home
and think about the purpose for each. Have them bring these thoughts to class for discussion in class tomorrow.
(even better if they can bring the material to share with class)
