Numeral Expanders
MAB whiteboard magnets
Lesson Procedure:
1. Instruct students to sit on floor
2. Use the magnetic MAB to form a number and as a class break the number into
thousands, hundreds, tens and ones and write the numerical number beneath
3. Write the numerical number and select a student to complete the thousands, hundreds,
tens and ones using the magnets
4. Repeat steps 2 and 4 until students are competent
5. Send to students to their desk to fill out their numeral expanders with the number on
board displayed using only MABS
6. Repeat twice more
7. Send students to complete their signpost page
Differentiation of learners:
To cater for students with needing additional support, the following strategies have been put
in utilised:
Visual images are used with the numerical symbols.
Assessment & Evaluation of Learning:
Students were able to recognise numbers up to 10 000
Students were able to represent and partition numbers up to 10000
