Dear Mike Wallace:
RE: GISC9305D3 CAD and GIS Assignment #3
The purpose of this deliverable is to gain a basic practical familiarity with
using source drawings, source drawing queries, and generating reports in
Excel from a source drawing query. A professional hardcopy technical
report was completed as noted in the terms of reference and can be found
on the proceeding pages. Working with source drawings and data queries
has been proven useful in solidifying my knowledge of AutoCAD Map 3D
and further enhances my ability to perform like a GIS expert.
Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me
at your convenience. I look forward to your comments and suggestions on
this deliverable.
Sincerely,
Marc Mancino

1.0 - Introduction
The scope of this project revolves around using a powerful
application called AutoCAD Map 3D. AutoCAD Map 3D is an
application that provides access to the tools required for mapping
and manipulating data, whether it is to create something new or to
update an existing project. The purpose of this project is to query
specific information from three provided source drawings:
San_Sewer 13 W15, Streets, and Taxlots OD to determine a cost
estimate for a sanitary sewer maintenance program. Source drawing
queries will also be used to extract mailing list information in order
to notify residents of the pipe replacement program. Furthermore,
the queries will help produce hardcopy maps required for the report.

2.0 Methodology
Before any data was used, all the required files were transferred to
an external hard drive. Graduate student initiative was used to find
what was required and then saved so it could be worked on from a
source other than the X: drive. This prevented future complications
and the potential corruption of data. Never work off the X: drive!

2.1 - Foundation
Before any development on a project can begin, there are
preliminary steps for creating a drawing. A new map that will be
used to house the source drawings was created using the template
named map2d.dwt. The Map Explorer tab of the task pane was
used to connect to the source drawings by creating a drive alias. The
three provided source drawings: San_Sewer 13 W15, Streets, and
Taxlots OD were input into the AutoCAD Map 3D drawing space.

2.2 Concrete
The Map Explorer tab of the task pane was used to access the query
library in order to extract the sizes and lengths of concrete pipe
required for the sewer relining. The provided cost per foot, noted in
the terms of reference, was used in conjunction with this
information to calculate the total cost required for the relining. The
total cost for this operation is $258, 286.28. The breakdown of the
cost for the different sizes of concrete pipe is detailed in the
attached excel spreadsheet titled DataSummary.
Queries and parameters used:
Property: LAYER = SAN_PIPE_MAIN
AND Data: Sewer_Pipe_Data.Material = CON

Upon exporting the query information to a text file, the proceeding

report options were used to do so. The text file was then input into
an excel spreadsheet for a more professional looking report format.
Report Options:
:Size@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:Material@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:LENGTH

2.3 Vitreous Clay

The Map Explorer tab of the task pane was used to access the query
library in order to extract the sizes and lengths of clay pipe required
for the clay sewer pipe replacement. The provided cost per foot,
noted in the terms of reference, was used in conjunction with this
information to calculate the total cost required for the pipe
replacement. The total cost for this operation is $103,905.32. The
breakdown of the cost for the different sizes of clay pipe is detailed
in the attached excel spreadsheet titled DataSummary.
Queries and parameters used:
Property: LAYER = SAN_PIPE_MAIN
AND Data: Sewer_Pipe_Data.Material = CLAY
Upon exporting the query information to a text file, the proceeding
report options were used to do so. The text file was then input into
an excel spreadsheet for a more professional looking report format.
Report Options:
:Size@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:Material@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:LENGTH

2.4 PVC
The Map Explorer tab of the task pane was used to access the query
library in order to extract the sizes, lengths, and project # for the
PVC pipe required for the PVC pipe replacement. The provided cost
per foot, noted in the terms of reference, was used in conjunction
with this information to calculate the total cost required for the pipe
replacement. The total cost for this operation is $106,762.64. The
breakdown of the cost for the different sizes of PVC pipe is detailed
in the attached excel spreadsheet titled DataSummary.

Property: LAYER = SAN_PIPE_MAIN

AND Data: Sewer_Pipe_Data.Project = 30-120
AND Data: Sewer_Pipe_Data.Material = PVC
Upon exporting the query information to a text file, the proceeding
report options were used to do so. The text file was then input into
an excel spreadsheet for a more professional looking report format.
Report Options:
:Project@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:Size@Sewer_Pipe_Data
:Material@Sewer_Pipe_Data

2.5 Property Owners

The Map Explorer tab of the task pane was used to access the query
library in order to extract the mailing list information, which
included: owner name, address, city, and zip code. A 500 foot buffer
fence was drawn around the PVC pipe replacement for Project 30120, as indicated below in Figure 1.The queries returned 105
records of mailing list information, which is detailed in the attached
excel spreadsheet titled DataSummary.
Queries and parameters used:
Location: CROSSING BUFFER FENCE
AND Property: LAYER = Taxlot_Centroids
Upon exporting the query information to a text file, the proceeding
report options were used to do so. The text file was then input into
an excel spreadsheet for a more professional looking report format.
Report Options:
:ADDR1@Parcels
:OWNNAME@Parcels
:OWNER_CITY@Parcels
:OWNER_ZIP_@Parcels

2.6 Map Creation

All of the required map data was exported from AutoCAD to ArcMap
for easier and more user-friendly map creation. All of the
appropriate cartographic elements were added to each map layout.
The resultant maps are displayed on the proceeding pages.

3.0 - Conclusion
After completing the requirements for this deliverable, it can be
concluded that AutoCAD Map 3D has many useful tools for creating
and manipulating drawings. It can produce aesthetically pleasing
and professional looking layouts for distribution in any real world
application involving spatial data. It has expanded our knowledge
base and enhanced our ability to perform like a GIS expert.
