The Almighty Hear our prayer:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,-and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of-wheeled
and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flewAnd, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God

On Saturday, August 10th the Northeast Nebraska Composite Squadron conducted orientation flights. Six cadets
went up in a Civil Air Patrol airplane on Saturday. Each cadet got the chance to fly the plane with help from the
pilot. Cadets went up two at a time and each Orientation flight lasted about one hour and thirty minutes. They
flew from the Norfolk regional airport to Columbus or Fremont depending on the pilot. Two Civil Air Patrol pilots
were there to help the cadets. The pilots went over all the safety information before each flight.

Nebraska Wing Members:

We are six months away from our 2014 Wing Conference and a change of Wing Commander as
Colonel David Plum nears his 4 year term ending. Where has the time gone?
The following SAVE THE DATES is the first of many informative emails forthcoming concerning
this activity. We look forward to seeing all of you there!

Information given from Madeline Kennedy

18 October 2013
CAP Members,
Great news! CAP has received Air Force approval to begin normal mission operations. All types of corporate
missions have also been opened up in the Web Mission Information Reporting System (WMIRS).
For pilots: If you are planning to fly on a mission, please ensure both the mission and individual
sortie have been approved in WMIRS prior to launch.
Sincerely,
Maj Gen Chuck Carr Mr. Don Rowland
CAP National Commander CAP Chief Operating Officer

Dear CAP Member:

We need YOUR help TODAY!
1- Civil Air Patrol is one of 15 non-profit aviation organizations nominated for the 2013 Lightspeed Aviation Foundation Pilot's Choice grant program. The organizations, selected from hundreds of nominees, will benefit from grants of
up to $10,000. CAP is currently in FOURTH place out the FIVE organizations in the Senior Finalists category, so we
REALLY need YOUR vote and the vote of any of your family and friends to move CAP to the TOP!
Voting closes November 1, 2013 and the winning organizations will be announced in November.
Please vote for CAP to receive a Lightspeed Aviation Foundation grant to support CAPs Aerospace Education programs at
http://www.lightspeedaviationfoundation.org/content.cfm/Voting/Get-to-know-the-2013-finalists/Civil-Air-Patrol
2- CAPs K-6 Aerospace Connections in Education (ACE) Program annually reaches 18-20,000 youth and their teachers
in classrooms nationwide. This program gives youth an early introduction to CAPs aerospace and cadet programs,
thus preparing the next generation of CAP cadets and adult members. The ACE uniform is a t-shirt that promotes a
sense of team pride, especially when observed by peers. These shirts are supported by donations from Lightspeed
Aviation, Air Force Association , and FLIR Thermal Imaging Systems, Inc., but, due to CAPs financial constraints, we
need additional donations from our members. Each $4 donation supports one student. Wont you consider making a
donation by November 15th of any amount to help continue to provide the ACE uniform to these students?
To make any size donation from $4 to $4,000, you can click HERE to donate using PayPal. If you do not have a PayPal
account, credit card instructions are found at that same link. You will receive an e-mail receipt for your tax-deductable
donation. If you prefer to send a check, a receipt will be mailed to you after receiving your check made payable to
CAP ACE and mailed to:
Civil Air Patrol National HQ ATTN: ACE 105 South Hansell Street Montgomery, AL 36112

CIVIL AIR PATROL FAMILY FISHING TRIP HOOKS A DDR DISCOVERY

Submitted by Maj Cindi Wachholz, CAP
Assistant Public Affairs Officer IA-001
15 August 2013

cindi.wachholz@iawg.cap.gov

7 August 2013- Ft. Dodge, Iowa. The Civil Air Patrols Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDR) focuses on drug abuse
awareness, education and prevention. The training received at the Northwest Iowa Composite Squadron (NWICS), in
Ft. Dodge, Iowa, led Cadet 1st Lieutenant (C/1Lt) Jacob Lewandowski to accurately identify and report a shake
and bake meth lab.
As with many larger communities, drug abuse is not uncommon, and homemade meth labs are easy enough to create.
Most would look like discarded trash, which is also not uncommon along a river bank. On 26 July 2013, the Lewandowski family was fishing at the old Hydro-Electric Dam near their home in
Ft. Dodge. I almost dismissed the objects as nothing more than
common litter, stated C/1Lt Lewandowski, then I remembered a presentation given to my Civil Air Patrol squadron
about common drugs in our area. I immediately told my
mother that I thought I had discovered- a shake and bake
meth lab.
Captain Roger Porter, from the Fort Dodge Police DepartmentNarcotics Division, had visited the NWICS in 2012 and presented
many examples and illustrations of the drug problem in Iowa.
That presentation was part of the DDR program coordinated by Capt Jan Lewandowski, the Iowa Wing and NWICSs
Drug Demand Reduction Officer. This is a perfect example of how important the DDR Program is in our squadrons
and in our communities, said Capt Lewandowski, we were able to take the necessary steps to have this potential
hazard removed not only from our family, but also anyone who may have stumbled across it in the future.
Immediately after the discovery, the Ft. Dodge Police Department was called and Officer Jody Chansler arrived to the
scene. It was indeed a meth lab and was most likely less than 24 hours old, stated Officer Chansler. The officer
then took the time to explain each part of the evidence to both Cadet Lewandowski and his brother, Luke, also a cadet in the NWICS. We were both very happy to learn as much as we could not only for ourselves, but also because
of our roles as Cadet DDR Officer Assistants in our squadron, stated C/1Lt Lewandowski.
The Civil Air Patrol Drug Demand Reduction Program assists units at all levels to instill an aggressive, positive, drugfree attitude in CAP members, Air Force families, Department of Defense, civilians and school-age children through a
comprehensive program. The DDR Program promotes CAP as a positive community service lifestyle, encourages
youth to remain in school, focuses on drug abuse awareness, education and prevention and provides positive activities as an alternative to drugs and gang violence.
Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with more than 61,000 members
nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental
U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the
AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and
drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in
aerospace education and serve as mentors to nearly 27,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet
programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 71 years.
CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of
U.S. military veterans. Visit www.gocivilairpatrol.com or www.capvolunteernow.com for more information.

Survey of dead livestock along state highways continues...

October 10, 2013
SOUTH DAKOTA CAPs South Dakota Wing aircraft again took to the skies to resume their survey over the highways in western
South Dakota that were hard hit by last weekends snowstorm.
CAP aircrews are pinpointing locations where dead livestock are obstructing state highways or are in highway right-of-ways. This
information is relayed to the states Department of Public Safety so that crews can be sent to remove the carcasses. This mission, which began Tuesday, will continue through today and possibly longer depending on the extent of the area the SDWG aircrews can cover and the weather conditions.
In addition, South Dakota Wing has received a mission from Pennington Countys Office of Emergency Management to survey
the countys roads and rights-of-way in the northern part of the county for deceased livestock so that crews can be sent to remove those carcasses.
Aerial photos of deceased livestock spotted by CAP aircrews along state highway rights-of-way are posted on the DPS website
at: http://dps.sd.gov/emergency_services/emergency_management/deceasedlivestock.aspx . For additional information, contact Maj. Todd Epp at 605.351.5021 or eppcap@gmail.com, or Mr. Terry Woster, DPS Public Affairs, 605-773-3178, or

S.D. CAP searches for stranded hunters in the Black Hills

October 9, 2013
SOUTH DAKOTA The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol has initiated an aerial search for hunters who may
be stranded in the Black Hills after the recent severe snowstorm. The Department of Game, Fish and Parks requested the search after receiving numerous reports of stranded hunters.
CAP aircraft will fly north of Highway 36 and 16A - from Highway 79 to the Wyoming border. This is the primary elk
hunting area and the area that received the most snow. Special GPS gear on CAP aircraft will allow the aircrew to
radio a precise location to SDGFP personnel on the ground so they can reach those stranded.
The state Department of Public Safety has requested CAP search for animal carcasses along all State Highway rightof-ways and I-90. This airborne mission is to be carried out in the counties of Harding, Butte, Lawrence, Pennington, Custer, Fall River, Shannon, Bennett, Jackson, Haakon, Meade, Perkins, Corson, Ziebach, and Dewey.
Initially, CAP aircraft based in Spearfish and Rapid City will take to the air to begin the two missions. CAP units
across the state have been put on alert should the missions need additional aircraft, more aircrews, ground search
teams or mission support staff.
The South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, with squadrons in South Dakota in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Rapid City,
Pierre, Custer and Spearfish has approximately 300 officers and cadets, six light aircraft and 17 multi-purpose vehicles. Autumn holidays like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times for children of all ages, who can
dress up in costumes, enjoy parties, enjoy fall fruits and vegetables, and eat yummy treats. These
celebrations also provide a chance to give out healthy snacks, get physical activity, and focus on
safety.
Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.
Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
