On Saturday, August 10th the Northeast Nebraska Composite Squadron conducted orientation flights. Six cadets
went up in a Civil Air Patrol airplane on Saturday. Each cadet got the chance to fly the plane with help from the
pilot. Cadets went up two at a time and each Orientation flight lasted about one hour and thirty minutes. They
flew from the Norfolk regional airport to Columbus or Fremont depending on the pilot. Two Civil Air Patrol pilots
were there to help the cadets. The pilots went over all the safety information before each flight.

Great news! CAP has received Air Force approval to begin normal mission operations. All types of corporate
missions have also been opened up in the Web Mission Information Reporting System (WMIRS).
For pilots: If you are planning to fly on a mission, please ensure both the mission and individual
sortie have been approved in WMIRS prior to launch.
Sincerely,
Maj Gen Chuck Carr Mr. Don Rowland

7 August 2013- Ft. Dodge, Iowa. The Civil Air Patrols Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDR) focuses on drug abuse
awareness, education and prevention. The training received at the Northwest Iowa Composite Squadron (NWICS), in
Ft. Dodge, Iowa, led Cadet 1st Lieutenant (C/1Lt) Jacob Lewandowski to accurately identify and report a shake
and bake meth lab.
As with many larger communities, drug abuse is not uncommon, and homemade meth labs are easy enough to create.
Most would look like discarded trash, which is also not uncommon along a river bank. On 26 July 2013, the Lewandowski family was fishing at the old Hydro-Electric Dam near their home in
Ft. Dodge. I almost dismissed the objects as nothing more than
common litter, stated C/1Lt Lewandowski, then I remembered a presentation given to my Civil Air Patrol squadron
about common drugs in our area. I immediately told my
mother that I thought I had discovered- a shake and bake
meth lab.
Captain Roger Porter, from the Fort Dodge Police DepartmentNarcotics Division, had visited the NWICS in 2012 and presented
many examples and illustrations of the drug problem in Iowa.
That presentation was part of the DDR program coordinated by Capt Jan Lewandowski, the Iowa Wing and NWICSs
Drug Demand Reduction Officer. This is a perfect example of how important the DDR Program is in our squadrons
and in our communities, said Capt Lewandowski, we were able to take the necessary steps to have this potential
hazard removed not only from our family, but also anyone who may have stumbled across it in the future.
Immediately after the discovery, the Ft. Dodge Police Department was called and Officer Jody Chansler arrived to the
scene. It was indeed a meth lab and was most likely less than 24 hours old, stated Officer Chansler. The officer
then took the time to explain each part of the evidence to both Cadet Lewandowski and his brother, Luke, also a cadet in the NWICS. We were both very happy to learn as much as we could not only for ourselves, but also because
of our roles as Cadet DDR Officer Assistants in our squadron, stated C/1Lt Lewandowski.
The Civil Air Patrol Drug Demand Reduction Program assists units at all levels to instill an aggressive, positive, drugfree attitude in CAP members, Air Force families, Department of Defense, civilians and school-age children through a
comprehensive program. The DDR Program promotes CAP as a positive community service lifestyle, encourages
youth to remain in school, focuses on drug abuse awareness, education and prevention and provides positive activities as an alternative to drugs and gang violence.
Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with more than 61,000 members
nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental
U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the
AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and
drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in
aerospace education and serve as mentors to nearly 27,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet
programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 71 years.
CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of
U.S. military veterans. Visit www.gocivilairpatrol.com or www.capvolunteernow.com for more information.

Minnesota 934th
USAF Reserve Family
The
was
my contribution
to the day's events at the 934th USAF Reserve Family Day. As the host and organizer of
Day,BD5
Fort

and
the car show for the event, I included the BD5 as my "entry." The Civil Air Patrol folks from the Fort Snelling and St
Paul Squadron assisted manning the aircraft, rotating about throughout about every half hour or so. Coloring books
and gliders were handed out to all the kids who visited the plane, which gave others an opportunity to talk to the
parents about the benefits and missions of Civil Air Patrol.
Rough guess of 2100 people were served meals that day.

Autumn holidays like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times for children of all ages, who can
dress up in costumes, enjoy parties, enjoy fall fruits and vegetables, and eat yummy treats. These
celebrations also provide a chance to give out healthy snacks, get physical activity, and focus on
safety.
Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.
Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of
treats you eat.
Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and
don't run from house to house.
Always test make-upin a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and
eye irritation.
Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay
safe.
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark
houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
