to/analyzing Variations on Pop! Goes the Weasel by Lucien Cailliet. Other
musical forms that will be covered in this unit are ABA and Rondo forms.
Students will participate in a class discussion on the definitions of form,
theme, and variations. Students will listen to the theme of Cailliets
composition and then identify how many variations are in the composition.
Students will be able describe the different variations used (student
worksheet).

Lesson Outline including

questions to students

Teacher will describe musical form as the basic plan or outline of a piece of
music. Teacher will ask what students think variations are (give examples).
Students will look at music for Pop Goes the Weasel and identify it as the
theme. After listening to the theme, students will listen to the whole piece to
determine how many variations there are (5). Students will then be given
worksheets and will be asked to describe each variation (fugue, minuet, music
box, jazzy march, violin).

Differentiated and/or
specially designed instruction

The unit will include varied instructional styles, with students working
individually, small groups of mixed abilities, and participating in class
discussion. Various levels of support will be provided.

Checking for Understanding

through-out and end of
lesson

Students will be able to answer questions verbally (discussions) as well as

written (worksheet). Students will work in small groups to create a
composition of ABA or Rondo form before the end of the unit. There will be a
written assessment at the end of the unit.
