If We Must Die
Claude McKay, 1889 - 1948

If we must dielet it not be like hogs hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must dieoh, let us nobly die, so that our precious blood may not be shed In vain
then even the monsters we defy shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
Oh, Kinsmen! We must meet the common foe though far outnumbered, let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow! what though before us lies the open grave?
Like men well face the murderous, cowardly pack, pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

What kind of figurative language?

Quote from the poem that uses figurative language

How does the figurative language add meaning or

richness to the poem? (You can use the purpose
column on your tools hand out if you need help)

If we must dielet it not be

like hogs

The simile adds depth to the

meaning. The soldiers in the
poem might die very soon, but
they dont want to be treated like
some animal that can be breed
and eaten and thrown out. The
soldiers want an honorable death
fighting for their country.The
soldiers do not want to die like
pigs and not be honored.
The purpose of this metaphor is
to make the enemy in the war
seem like animals, or very wild.
The mad, hungry dogs is
probably referring to the
germans in a world war.The
enemy is described as dogs
because of how ruthlessly they
kill or how they torture. The poet
also says making their mock at
our accursed lot, which probably
means that the enemy is invading
their country or home and
ruthlessly killing their
people.However the accursed lot
could be the jewish population
and the hungry dogs could be the
germans.So it would mean that
