The Gospel of Mark Speaks to us Today
The book of Mark has much to say to churches today beginning with
the reading for June 7th where Jesus says a house divided cannot
stand. In this challenging time for us at Immanuel, we need to be
united in our purpose and the mission to which we are called, that
being to go and teach and baptize.

Our Mission Statement:

Our Mission is to Honor
God, by sharing His love,
living in Christ, and serving
our community.

Romans 12:1

As we begin the second half of the church year we see the long, green
season of Pentecost before us. In this Lectionary Year B the Gospel lessons will be from the Gospel of St. Mark. John Mark,
though not an eyewitness of Jesus ministry, wrote from Rome recording the things he had learned from the Apostle Peter. His writing is
addressed to the entire church of the time many of whom were not
Jews. Hence, his readers didnt understand Jewish tradition. Marks
goal was to help them understand Jewish customs and traditions so
they could understand how Jesus was the promised Messiah and the
culmination of Gods plan for salvation.
The book of Mark is not intended to be a biography of Jesus life or
ministry. Rather, it is a collage of stories and events that are representative of His teaching and ministry. Many parables and miracles
are highlighted as well as stories of testimony, controversy and callings. The gospel of Mark is the shortest of the gospels and the most
fast paced. Mark uses many verbs indicating imperative actions. The
word immediately is used 36 times is the 16 chapters of the book.
May God bless us as we study, learn and apply the lessons from this
important Gospel.

Its Summer!
While June is only unofficially Summer we still begin thinking of warm Summer days, vacations and
holidays. In June we celebrate Fathers Day, Flag Day, birthdays and anniversaries. In July we celebrate our nations birthday. Summer is a time when Oregonians who traditionally have been stuck
inside during the long, gray, and rainy winter want to get outside every minute they can to make up
for lost time in the sun.
Vacations, reunions and family get-togethers are all indeed very important. We do those and other
things for recreation and re-creation. All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy the old saying
used to go; I dont know if there is a more current equivalent. Nonetheless, it is true. We all need
time away to regenerate and re-create so we can return with a fresh perspective on life in general.
The one thing we dont stop doing in the Summer is maintaining our nourishment. Our bodies need
to be nourished every day. And if you think about it our hearts and souls need to continue to be nourished as well. We feed our bodies three times a day. How many times a day or week do you nourish
your heart and soul? We cannot make up for the spiritual nourishment that we missed.

The congregation voted at the May 17th voters meeting, to send $1000 to the Lutheran World Relief, for Nepal. This money will help transport 1,000 personal care kits, 100 community water filtration units, and more than 9,000 quilts. This is one of the poorest countries in the world, and first aid
is lacking and medical facilities are overwhelmed.
We must remember to keep them in our daily prayers.
