Week # 1

Dates ___________________________

Wednesday

Friday

Grouping
Teacher will select groups
based on their writing the
previous day (students who
had similar perfect parties
will be grouped together).

Presentation
Each group will create and
present a poster showing
the original recipe, the math
involved to change the
recipe to feed 30, and the
new recipe.

Assess
Give a quiz on adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and
dividing fractions.

Practice
Each group will be given a
recipe meant to feed a
number of people other than
30 (10, 20, 50, 60, etc.).
They will then need to
rewrite the recipe so it will
feed 30 people.

They will then begin

investigating the menu,
ultimately choosing one
entre, three side dishes,
and one dessert.

Keep a journal/log of
different conversions for
future reference
EL Strategies:
Work with a partner to
complete these tasks

EL Strategies:
Tell a partner about their
perfect party, and then write.

Investigation
Groups will complete some
research on the type of
party they wish to give.

Add to journal/log
Intervention:
Presentations will give
opportunity to reteach
concepts of
multiplying/dividing
fractions. Students can
have the opportunity to
teach their peers which
sometimes works better
than the teacher reteaching

recipes for their menu items

will be given 1-3 staple
ingredients to convert

etc. The groups will work
together to convert other
ingredients

Add to journal/log

EL Strategies:
Work in groups, give one
ingredient to convert
Intervention Lesson:
Teacher can work with small
groups of students who are
struggling consistently with
their part of the math.

Whole class discussion

What is a budget? How do
we create a budget? Why is
it important to have a
budget? What do we need
to do to stick to our budget?

Research
Students will begin to
research the cost of their
ingredients to begin to form
a budget. They can use
grocery ads from the
newspaper, online grocery
stores, etc.

Research contd
Once they have created a
budget, the teacher will
make a copy.
Students will continually
adjust their budget as they
research and confirm items
they will need to buy. (They
will compare their original
budget to the final budget at
the end of the project).

Assess
Quiz on adding, subtracting,
multiplying, and dividing
decimals to the hundredths
place.

Research
Go shopping!! Purchase
all of the ingredients needed
for the menu for their party.
Keep track of each
purchase so the final
budget will be correct.

Practice
These questions will lead
into some money math
involving the adding and
subtracting of decimals.
We will also review
multiplying and dividing
decimals.

Add to journal/log

Add to journal/log

Add these processes to

journal/log for future
reference
Intervention Lesson:
Based on the assessment,
the teacher could work with
small groups on the concept
tested above if needed.

EL Strategies:
Template for the purchase of
items. Specific
job/ingredient to research so
as not to overwhelm.

Daily PBL Plans

Monday
Research contd
Complete the shopping
process

Party Planning/Fractions
Tuesday
Create
Create the presentation.
Groups may make a poster,
powerpoint, or any other
type of presentation they

must include:
1 menu items
2 original recipes and
rewritten recipes for 30,
showing the math
3 - itemized budget
4 total cost for the food as
well as per person,
showing the math

EL Strategies:
Each group member will be
given a specific part of the
presentation to report on.
This will allow for
practice/questions ahead of
time.

Continue putting together
the presentation
