A. Personal Statement
After having two Dental Hygiene degrees, working in different dental offices, and
interacting with multicultural societies, it confirmed for me that perusing my Master's
degree would open an abundance of new dental hygiene career opportunities. This
way, instead of interacting with an individual, I can interact with a large group or do
something that will benefit a national population; such as a career in public health and
research. While I was looking for clients for my school clinic at Chabot College, and
while working at La Clinica de La Raza, I learned that a majority of whom I came
across didnt care about their oral health. It seemed that they didnt value their teeth or
count them as a part of their body. Their teeth were the least of their priorities. The
apathy of these people kept me thinking about other paths of oral health careers. Since
their mindset could be found anywhere, I could work for a wide spectrum of people and
inform them about the relationship between their oral health and their overall health,
which may automatically impact their daily lives. Being involved in the community, by
volunteering at nonprofit community dental clinics is clear evidence of my passion
towards the overall wellness of people. Due to my family situation, I know that
pursuing my MS degree will be challenging for me; however, I know myself and that I
will finish the program successfully by putting more time and effort just as in the times
that I was a student at Chabot College and in the Netherlands, but with more
confidence, courage and certainty.

For obtaining a Master Degree in Dental Hygiene Program at UCSF, Ive cultivated a
research study, which will benefit parents and guardian of children with asthma, who
uses inhalers and/or syrups as asthma medications. It will help to show that oral health
specialists should take responsibility to properly inform parents of the oral side effects
of asthma medications.
