NativeAmericanCulture
Oneofthemostimportantarchaeological
collectionsinthesoutheasternU.S.thatwas
donatedbythelateClarenceH.Webbof
Shreveport,LouisianaresidesintheWilliamson
Museum.Thecollectionholdsartifacts
centralizingaroundtheprehistoricCaddoanperiod
inLouisiana,Arkansas,Oklahoma,andTexas.
WithafocusonmaterialsfromtheeasternUnited
States,themuseumalsoholdstribalcollectionsof
artifactsfromfortyonesouthernandeastern
NativeAmericantribe.
NativeAmericanbasketrythatwashandwovenbytheChoctawTribe
wasdonatedtotheWilliamsonMuseumtobepreservedforpresent

Thevarietyinthesecollectionsnotonlyencouragestudentstolearnmoreaboutthesetribes,butitalso
givesthemtheopportunitytointeractwiththetribes.Scholars,researchers,andNativeAmerican
descendantsvisitthemuseumoccasionallytomaintainorrevitalizethetraditionsthatoncewere.
AtthecoreofthesecollectionsarethosedonatedbythelateMissCarolineDormonandMrs.King
RandacquiredfromtheChitimachaandKoasatiinthel930s.Additionally,thereistheextensive

collectiondonatedfromthelateClaudeMedfordJr.,whichwasmadebetweenthe1950sandthe1980s
thatcontainsmaterialsfromthemajorityofthesouthernandeasternAmericanIndiantribes.Amore
recentcollectionwasdonatedbyfriendsofClaudeMedford,HaroldandMargeMalmberg.That
collectiondatesprimarilybetweenthe19701980s.Thislatercollectionalsocontainsfineexamplesof
ClaudeMedford'sbasketry.

TheOldWilliamsonMuseum
TheWilliamsonMuseumwasestablishedin1935inhonorofthelateprofessorGeorge
WilliamsonasanaturalhistorymuseumfortheLouisianaNormalSchool.Originallyhousedin
GuardiaHall,themuseumwassoondestroyedin1965inafirethatburnedmosttheChitimacha
andChoctawbasketrycollectionsandthebuildingitself.
CurrentNSUprofessor,Dr.PeteGregorywasthe
curatorforthemuseumatthetime.
Wehadahugearchaeologicalcollectionbuiltup
overthepastcoupleofyears,Gregorysaid.It
wasarealloss.Butwehadtoputthewhole
collectionbacktogether.
TheWilliamsonMuseumwasreestablishedin
1971inKyserHallwiththepresentcollectionsit
currentlycarriesnow.
GuardiaHallhousedtheoriginalWilliamsonMuseumandmanyNative
Americanartifactsprioreverythingbeinglostinthe1965fire.Photo

Wedidntsavealot,Gregorysaid.Mostofthestoneartifactsblewup,anditwasveryhot.Welost
everything.Sowestartedoverfromscratch.

WilliamsonMuseumToday
Since1963,Dr.PeteGregoryhasbeenthecuratoroftheWilliamsonMuseum.Sincethefire,Gregory
hashelpedreestablishthemuseuminKyserHallalongwithworkingwiththeNSUAnthropological
Society.
Alloftheethnographiccollectionshere:baskets,clothes,contemporaryIndianthingsallcamehere
sincethe1970s,Gregorysaid.

In1971,theWilliamsonMuseum
beganholdingBasketDay,itsannual
AmericanIndiancraftsday,toallow
tribalartisanstosharetheirartswith
studentsandthecommunity.This
way,artisanscansharethepastand
keepthetraditionoftheirtribesalive
formanyyearstocome.
TheWilliamsonMuseumislocated
onthesecondfloorinKyserHall.
