The4thgradecurriculuminSocialStudiesfocusesontheregionsoftheUnitedStates.
AtSouthElementarySchool,studentslearnaboutmajorcitiesandotherimportant
geographicalfeatureswithineachregion.WhilestudyingtheEastregion,studentswill
designvirtualfieldtripstopopularlandmarksinmajorcitiesontheEastCoast(New
York,WashingtonD.C.,Philadelphia,andBoston).Studentswillresearchthehistorical
significancebehindthelandmarksandthecurrentinfluencesoftheselandmarkson
societytoday.Studentswillcreateamoviewithvoiceovernarrationtogiveviewera
truevirtualtourofthelandmarks.
Theaimofthisunitisforstudentstoapplymultipleskillsfromdifferentcontentareas
intoonelearningproject.Studentswillresearch,takenotes,write,narrate,andcreate.
Thefactualinformationcollectedwillbeusedforstudentstoinformothersonthe
historicalsignificanceoflandmarksinmajorcitiesoftheEastCoast.

TheCommonCoreLiteracyWritingstandardsexpectfourthgradestudentstodraw
evidencefrominformationaltextstosupportanalysis,reflection,andresearch.Under
thosesamestandardsforreadingforinformationaltexts,studentsareexpectedtoread
andcomprehendsocialstudiestexts.BymixingthesetwoCommonCorestandards
withIllinoisStateSocialSciencestandards,studentswillbereading,researching,and
writingtounderstandandexplainthehistoricalsignificanceofplacesandhowthey
influencepeople'sperceptions.
