UniversityGoal:InquiryandCriticalThinking
OverthecourseofthistermatPSUIhavelearnedthewaysinwhichPortland's
universitystudiesprogramsaimstohelpit'sstudentstobetheirbestselves.Ofthethree
universitygoals,IfeelthattheonemostrelevanttomylearningandhowIintendtocarry
outmycareerhereatPSUistheInquiryandCriticalThinkinggoal.AsStatedon
Portland'swebsite,"Studentswilllearnvariousmodelsofinquirythrough
interdisciplinarycurriculaproblemposing,investigation,conceptualizinginorderto
becomeactive,selfmotivated,andempoweredlearners."
IchosetotaketheFRINQcalledPortland,unknowingly,thatitwould
becontainingmanydegreesofcriticalthinkingandwritingandthatIwouldhavetolearn
toculminatemyideaspertainingtomyowneducationandsurroundingsinseveral
essays.IhavechosentousethisgoalasarepresentationofwhatIhavelearnedhere
becauseitdirectlyrelatestoourtopicoftheImportanceofEducationintheclassthis
term.Atthebeginningoftheterm,theclasswasgivenanassignmenttoexplainseveral
differentversionsoflearning,FreiresProblemPosingMethodincomparisontothe
BankingMethodorCrononsideaofhowtobecomeliberallyeducated.Alongwiththis,
weweretoexplainwhatwethoughtitmeanttohavealiberaleducation.

Thefirstpartoftheuniversitysgoalistolearnvariousmodelsofinquiry,which
isexactlywhatwasdoneduringthisterminthePortlandclass.Weweregivenbothsides
ofthelearningscale,bothextremes,andbothverydifferent,thenweweregivenachance
toexplainwhywefeltonewayoranother,then,weincorporatedthesecondpartofthe
goalbytheuseofquotesandseveralotheracademicpapersgiventous.Weweretoldto
giveouropinion,butitcouldntbeblind,wehadtousesourcesandgiverelevancetoour
topic.TheassignmentthatIhavechosenasarepresentationofthechosengoalisa
testamenttothewaysinwhichIhavegrownasastudentandpersonwhoactsasan
integralpartinsociety,aswealldoatonepointoranotherinourlives.
TheessayIhavewritteniscalledTheImportanceofEducationanditreflects
onthemanydifferentwaysinwhichwe,asstudents,learn.Myargumentcanbestbe
summedupbysayingthatnoteverythingisblackandwhiteandwhenitcomestoour
educationthereisagrayareathatmoststudentslie,theideaofaliberallyeducatedman
liesnotwithinwhathehasntlearned,butwithinwhathehaslearned.Themostvalid
reasonbehindmychoiceofthisessayresideswithinScoreof3.Thisscorespecifiesthat
thoseinprogresstowardsthegoalofInquiryandCriticalThinking,Makespersonal
connectionsoridentifiesbetweensourcesinalimitedway.(Pg.1,UNSTRubric)The
essenceofmypaperisdirectlyrelatedtopersonalexperiencewithallofthemethodsof
learning.FormostoftheessayIreferencemybrotherandmyownexperiencesgrowing
upandreferencehowheandIhavelearnedandunderstoodthingsdifferentlyasour
educationhasfurthered.Inanoverallreviewofboththeuniversitygoalsdefinitionto
becomeanactiveandselfpoweredlearnerandmyessay,thereisclearprogressnot

onlyasawriter,butalsoasastudentatPSU,forIaccomplishedbothwhenItooka
stancethatdiffersfromthenormbytheuseofpersonalandanalyticsources(pg.1,
UNSTRubric)
