World Cultures
June 7th, 2015
Dear United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon,
Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. It results in the
expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. This is important to
people whether you are from China, Italy, or if you are black, white, green or blue.
Globalization leads to so much opportunity from person to person. The spread of ideas
and mindsets on certain topics leads to progress here on Earth. Globalization is a huge
need when speaking about making this place a better world to live on. I truly believe
everyone should have a voice in this worlds society no matter who you are. One idea,
song, invention or economic plan could change millions of lives. As people, ideas,
knowledge and goods move more easily around the globe, the experiences of people
around the world become more similar.
The spread of different kinds of music is an example of this. All parts of the world
listen to and make different kinds of music. There are tradition based music and new
music like rap and pop. Also the radio and TV are a big part of this. People call this
being more west or westernizing. Back in the day, Europe and other places of the world
were split on the decision of trying to be more like the west or keep their old traditions
and live a life that many before them have lived. Eventually, Europe moved on and
globalization was a huge part of everyones life. Clothing styles have also become
more uniform as a result of globalization. National and regional costumes have become
rarer as globalization has increased. In most parts of the world, professionals such as
bankers wear suits, and jeans and T-shirts are common for young people. There has
also been an increasing exchange of foods across the globe. People in England eat
Indian curry, while people in Peru enjoy Japanese sushi. Meanwhile, American fast food
chains have become common throughout the world. McDonald's has more than 31,000
restaurants in 118 countries. And people all across the world are eating more meat and
sugary foods, like those sold in fast food restaurants.
Now all of those past topics are positive effects of globalization. Now Im going to
point out some of the negative aspects of globalization. Globalization operates mostly
in the interests of the richest countries, which continue to dominate world trade at the
expense of developing countries. The role of LEDCs in the world market is mostly to
provide the North and West with cheap labor and raw materials. Global commerce is
increasingly dominated by transnational corporations which seek to maximize profits
without regard for the development needs of individual countries or the local
populations. Also, cultural uniqueness is lost in favor of homogenization and a "universal
culture" that draws heavily from American culture. Competition among developing
countries to attract foreign investment leads to a "race to the bottom" in which countries

dangerously lower environmental standards. On the plus side, globalization sped up

dramatically in the twentieth century with the proliferation of air travel, the expansion of
free trade, and the dawn of the Information Age. Miles of fiber-optic cable now connect
the continents, allowing people around the world to communicate instantly through the
borderless World Wide Web.
I think that so far you are truly trying your best and doing what you think is better
for the majority of the population. I just think that you should consider poverty and the
developing nations. You could change one life at a time by allowing globalization to
spread equally throughout the world. Thank you for your time and I hope I hear from
you soon.
Sincerely,
Dylan Grant
