CHAPTER -1 :- NUMBER SYSTEM

CBSE MATHS - IX

KEY POINTS

Natural numbers are 1, 2, 3 .. denoted by N.

Whole numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3 denoted by W.
Integers are -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 denoted by Z.

Rational numbers - All the numbers which can be written in the form p/q, q0 are called
rational numbers where p and q are integers.

Irrational numbers - A number s is called irrational, if it cannot be written in the form p/q where
p and q are integers and q0.

Collection of real numbers is a collection of rational and irrational numbers.

There are infinite rational and irrational numbers.
Every rational and irrational numbers can be represented on real line.
Every point on real line corresponds to either a rational or an irrational number.
Between any two rational numbers infinite rational numbers exist.
Between any two rational numbers infinite irrational numbers exist.
Between any two irrational numbers infinite rational numbers exist.
Between any two irrational numbers infinite irrational numbers exist.
Numbers in the form a+ , where a and b are whole numbers, b 0 are irrational numbers.
Sum of two rational numbers is always a rational number.
Difference of two rational numbers is always a rational number.
Product of two rational numbers is always a rational number.

Division of two non-zero rational numbers is always a rational number.

Sum of two irrational numbers may or may not be irrational.
Difference of two irrational numbers may or may not be irrational.
Product of two irrational numbers may or may not be irrational.
Sum of a rational number and an irrational number is always irrational.
Difference of one rational number and one irrational number is always irrational.
Product of one rational number and one irrational number is always irrational.
The decimal expansion of a rational number is either terminating or non-terminating recurring.
Thus we say that a number whose decimal expansion is either terminating or non-terminating
recurring is a rational number.

The decimal expansion of an irrational number is non-terminating non-recurring.

If r is rational and s is irrational then r+s, r-s, r.s are always irrational numbers but r/s may be
rational or irrational.
