halping others, a journey that bogan during the 1950s when she becams angaged in the Chi
Rignts Movement and has spanned more than fve decades and Incudes her leading the
Southern contingency of the New Exodus Wakers In 1989 as they marched fom Roanoke,
Virginia to Washington, D.C. for 255 pls miles to make tho plight of the hameleas a priory in

WHEREAS, affectionately known as Mother King, this soloss voluntosr took Dr. King’s
words, “thea hundred years of humiliation, abuse and depdivation cannot be expected to find
voice in a whisper” to heart end found her voice to rally people to the cause and effectuate
postive change; and
WHEREAS, Georgia King fas spent her life being a voice for the most vulnerable

WHEREAS, this ifelong public sorvant and grassroots leader le a reciplont of several
awards including the Natonal Rosa Parks Award, the TriState Defenders Legend's Ava, tha
‘Woman of Excelence Award and the Women of Achievement Award and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED That the Memphis City Council hereby
dedicates Poplar Avenue betvesn Orleans and Ayers as “Evangelist Georgia A. King
“Avenue” in honor of Mather Georgia A. King.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the City Engineer is requested to affix suitable signs
designating such pubic road.
