Learning Intentions
By the end of this lesson, students will have had the opportunity to demonstrate their
ability to:
valuate Australian notes and coins
count money to reach a particular value
Resources and ICT

Lesson Procedure:
1. Explain to students that silver coins represent cents and gold and notes represent
dollars.
2. Explain to students that each coin has a different value write value on board and
explain that it means how much something is worth
3. Hold up a variety of coins and ask students what their value is and write them on the
board
4. Ask students if I were to add certain coins together, how much money would I have
5. Ask students if I wanted to purchase something of x value that is made with one coin,
what coin would I use to buy it
6. Ask students what coins would be needed to purchase a product costing x
7. Count coins together with students until they reach x amount
8. From x display x using the same monetary value with different coins and ask if this
would also be suitable.
9. Explain that like coming to the number 100, there are many ways to reach the number.
10. Introduce to year 3 bank notes.
11. Explain to students each note tells us the value and we use this to count money.
12. Hand out coins to pairs and write the following amounts on the board. Have each
student make the amount with their coins.
90c, 20c, 10c, 50c, 70c, 80x, 85c, $1, $1.50, $2.70, $3.45.
Challenge how many different ways are there to make 20c (20, 10x2, 5x4, 5x2+10
4 ways).
13. Play 2 games of Bingo using money
14. Instruct students to complete page 2 78/79, 3 56/57
Early finishers Mathletics / complete speaking program / silent reading

Differentiation of learners:
To cater for students with needing additional support, the following strategies have been put
in utilised:
Offer extra support to students who struggle with literacy and numeracy.

Students were able to identify time to count and valuate coins and notes.
