StrengthCondRes28(10):29732980,2014Thisstudyinvestigatedtheeffectofa
periodizedtrainingprogramoninternaltrainingload(ITL),recoverystressstate,immune
endocrineresponses,andphysicalperformancein19elitefemalebasketballplayers.The
participantsweremonitoredacrossa12weekperiodbeforeaninternationalchampionship,
whichincluded2overloadingandtaperingphases.Thefirstoverloadingphase(fourthto
sixthweek)wasfollowedbya1weektapering,andthesecondoverloadingphase(eighthto
10thweek)wasfollowedbya2weektapering.ITL(sessionratingofperceivedexertion
method)andrecoverystressstate(RESTQ76Sportquestionnaire)wereassessedweeklyand
biweekly,respectively.Pretrainingandposttrainingassessmentsincludedmeasuresof
salivaryIgA,testosteroneandcortisolconcentrations,strength,jumpingpower,running
endurance,andagility.Internaltrainingloadincreasedacrossallweeksfrom2to11(p
0.05).Afterthefirsttaperingperiod(week7),afurtherincreaseinITLwasobservedduring
thesecondoverloadingphase(p0.05).Afterthesecondtaperingperiod,adecreaseinITL
wasdetected(p0.05).Adisturbanceinathletestressrecoverystatewasnotedduringthe
secondoverloadingperiod(p0.05),beforereturningtobaselinelevelinendofthesecond
taperingperiod.Thetrainingprogramledtosignificantimprovementsinthephysical
performanceparametersevaluated.Thesalivarymeasuresdidnotchangedespitethe
fluctuationsinITL.Inconclusion,aperiodizedtrainingprogramevokedchangesinITLin
elitefemalebasketballplayers,whichappearedtoinfluencetheirrecoverystressstate.The
trainingplanwaseffectiveinpreparingparticipantsforcompetition,asindicatedby
improvementsinrecoverystressstateandphysicalperformanceaftertapering.
