to the carpet and sit along the outside where you will
explain and demonstrate the game
Call the students to the carpet by rows-make sure they
stay seated until their row is called
Once all students are surrounding the carpet ask for a
volunteer to help demonstrate
Ensure that the students know that you expect them all
to listen carefully
Ask the volunteer to roll the die, then pick a card out of
the envelope. Look at the number that the volunteer
rolled on the Roll and Spell instruction sheet to
determine how the student will spell the word
For example, if the student rolls a 5, look at the
instruction sheet and ask him/her to read the word that
was picked in an Alien Voice. FYI One person selects
the word, reads it to his/her partner and tells them to
spell it (shouldnt be able to see the word, just hear it)
Talk about expectations: Did I just roll the die or did I
chuck it across the room? Was I standing up or sitting
on my behind? Remind them that I will be looking for
good sportsmanship.
Ask the class if they have any questions
Tell the class that you have put them into groups/pairs
and will each start with one envelope
Explain that once they have completed their envelope
they need to come see you (switch envelopes with
other pairs when they are done)
Before the students get organized for the activity,
remind them of rules
Tell the students that when you turn off the lights they
need to freeze and stop talking
Read out the pairs and tell them to go get the materials
that are needed (die, Roll and Spell Instructions) before
coming to you for the envelopes
Children begin game
Circulate to make sure there are no problems and
identify any problems there may be

Accommodations: There will be one small group of 3 with a

modified envelop of words to ensure success. (Kaycee,
Kayden, Faith) Chase will work with TA on long vowel U
words.

Self-Evaluation:
I cant describe how nice it is to have my first lesson of many under my
belt! It was very eye opening and has helped me gain a better understanding
of what is all required to teach a lesson. Teachers make it look so easy, but
until you do it yourself you dont understand the amount of time and thought
that goes into each lesson. There is a great amount of detail that needs to be
considered when forming a lesson plan. From this lesson, I am aware of
certain things that I can improve on and certain things that I can continue for
future lessons. One aspect that I need to keep in mind for my next lesson is
to be consistent when dealing with a student that is off task. Before the
students began the activity I informed them of my expectations for them and
that if any of them were misbehaving they would be sent to their desks.
During my lesson I had to remind one student at least three times of what I
expected. Instead, I should have sent the student to his/her desk earlier like I
said I would during my instructions. This will ensure that the students know
that I will not allow any misbehaving and that I am consistent with what I say.
One idea that my TA mentioned was to involve more creativity within the
lesson to keep students engaged. Going around the circle during instructions
and having the children practice the different voices would have been a
great way to implement creativity within the classroom. I look forward to
putting the knowledge I have gained from this lesson into good use to help
assist me in improving future lessons!
