MATH 5 Problem Set: DEFINITE INTEGRALS

DIRECTIONS:
 Answer by Parts. Show complete solutions.
 Part I is DUE 1st meeting next week (LABEL: 4HW6)
 Part II is DUE 2nd meeting next week (LABEL: 4HW7)
 Part III is BONUS. Submit complete solution to only one problem. The first one to submit correct
solution to a problem earns the bonus (5 points) to the problem.

II. Set-up the integral then find the area of the region: (5 points each)
1. bounded by the parabolas y = x2 – 4x and y = 2x – x2.
2. bounded by the parabola y2 = x and the line y = x – 2.
3. bounded by the curve y = x3 + x2 – 4x – 4 and the x-axis.
4. bounded by the curve y = x3 and its tangent at the point (1, 1).
5. bounded by the ellipse 16x2 + 9y2 = 144.

III. Solve the following problems:

1. If the region bounded by the parabola y = x2 – 1 and the x-axis and the region below the
parabola but above the x-axis and to the left of the line x = k, where k > 1, have equal areas,
find k.
2. If the region bounded by the parabola y = x2 and the line y = x + 2 is divided into 2 parts of
equal areas by the line x = k, find k.
3. Find the equation of the line that passes through the point (1, 5) and cuts off a region with
the least area from the parabola y = x2.
4. Find the minimum and maximum values of the function f  x    sint dt for all real x.
