espositivo.
equilibri.
pi interessanti know how, le pi aggiornate tecnologie,
Burdett, Jacques Herzog, William McDonough e

And traced by solid white strokes onto black, just like the first
drawings that gave the pavilion its form, it is seemingly a cross
between the sketches of Erich Mendelsohns Einstein Tower and
hnz pictograms in Chinese calligraphy.
It is not by chance that someone in the crowd of architects asks
him which modeling programs were used to generate the shape.
Libeskind replies that it was all drawn by hand: the most direct
method for transforming thoughts and ideas into reality. The
computer typically came along later during the planning process.
Inside the grounds of the Expo 2015, the Vanke Pavilion towers in its
strategic location at a stones throw from Lake Arena and Palazzo
Italia. This edifice is compelling for its strong figurative disposition,
underscored by the spectacular shell of ceramic tile with iridescent
red lacquer, and for the peculiar morphology of its shape, both which

It is not without merit that the vermilion and fractal frame of the
pavilion, consisting of approximately 4,200 porcelain stoneware tiles,
has already earned its iconicity throughout the entire campus of this
edition of the Expo.
By exploring the criteria of parametric design through the organic
plasticity of the outer shell, Daniel Libeskind succeeded in bringing to
life a spectacular organic shape with a surface spanning 578 m2 36
meters long, 19 m wide and 12 m high. There are three levels on the
inside (totaling 1,000 m2 of walking area), and an additional green
terrace at the top boasting a panoramic view of the entire Expo site.
The large space inside the pavilion was outfitted by Ralph Appelbaum
Associates with a three-dimensional bamboo configuration (using
about 8,000 meters of cane) which marks the exposition route, while

Once the carcass was completed and the steel bracing rafters
installed, the next step was to mount the ceiling made from
corrugated sheets filled with reinforced concrete casting. At this
point, works began on the structure envelope. A secondary dome
structure was built over the portal frame structure, and generated
through the 3D model. The next step was to apply the various layers
of thermal and acoustic materials (mineralized wood fiber panels and
graphite polystyrene tiles), then a layer of special mesh plaster to
ensure air and water resistance, and finally the top coat.
It was a very delicate sequence, owing to the parametric intricacy of
the space that was being molded inside the structure, and the need
to keep any deviation from the project marker points at a minimal,
since the margin for correction needed to be compatible with what
was conceded for the ceramic tile structure, which would be mounted
once the work was finished.
For its installation, solid steel panels were used, and once mounted
to the primary and secondary structure, would run along the layer
Without having any solid points of reference for this sinuous and
asymmetrical structure, the operation called for repeated assessment
checks, and the Studio Libeskind participated in the structure tracing
as to ensure the end product.
In this regards, explained Agostino Ghirardelli: We also did an on-site
assessment of the visual perception, to correct any imperfections
where the surface didnt appear smooth enough. We were striving
to conceive an image of agility and organic continuity in this form.
So, just like with sculpturing, the piece needed to be molded and
adjusted manually.
But the aspect of engineering that engaged the Studio the most, says
Ghirardelli, was safety, from wind stress to random fractures caused
by the impact of other unforeseeable incidents. In this regard, every
ceramic tile was reinforced on its back with a glass fiber security net
and fastened to a metallic slab at the structure grounds, both with
high-performance glue and four anchor bolts inserted inside special
shallow conical holes in the backs of the ceramic tiles.
