High River
The water started rushing into the church. As it rose, the Rev. Susan
Lukey, one of the ministers at High River United Church, grabbed the
office computers, some granola bars, and prayer blankets and climbed
up a ladder to a narrow alcove above the sanctuary. Through two small
windows, she had a view of the torrents of water that were engulfing
High River, Alberta, in the spring of 2013.
She figured the water wouldnt reach her, and fortunately the power had
gone out so there was no danger from live electricity, but cell phones
werent working anymore and no one knew whether she was safe. Susan
spent a cold, dark night in her alcove above the flood knowing everything
beneath her was now ruined.
When she finally came down and was able to leave the church, Susan
knew repairing the church would be a huge task. What she didnt know
was that her home and the homes of many of her parishioners were all in
the same situation.
Help came for the people forced from their homes, and from United
Churches across the country special collections were sent to High River.
Almost immediately, Mission and Service was able to send money to
help with rebuilding that was not covered by insurance.
High River United reopened on the first Sunday of Advent, five months
after the flood. And in spring 2014, Susan and others planted sunflowers
in gardens throughout the town to soak up the toxins left from the flood, a
sign that hope is returning.
Our Mission and Service is not just for disasters overseas. It also
supports congregations like High River United when the unthinkable
happens. Thank you, and please continue to give.
Mighty and tender God, our gifts to M&S help your church
to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.
