Marawi City formally renamed Islamic City of Marawi lies

in the province of Lanao del Sur in Philippines. It is the


capital city of Lanao del Sur and people from Marawi

are called Maranao People. The name is


derived from the popular Lake Lanao which is
also called as Ranao in Maranao.
Marawi City is well known as the Summer
Capital of the South. Politically subdivided into
96 barangays, Maranao is the official
language of the city that has 90% Muslim
population. Being predominantly Muslim sale
of alcoholic products is forbidden in Marawi
City. Majority of the people are literate in
Tagalog, Cebuano and English. The economy
of Marawi City is largely based on agriculture
and exports. Most industries in the city are
agriculture-oriented with cottage enterprises
taking up activities like garment-making, mat
and malong weaving, woodcraft, brassware
making, web development and black smithy.

the most number of visitors within Lanao del
Sur to Marawi for educational purposes.

Founded in 1961, it serves as an educational


institute and a center of social and cultural
integration. Dansalan Junior College also
serves as the premiere institution in the
province offering educational opportunities to
all.
