Foreword

Idioms and popular expressions are what makes a language rich


and colourful. They provide a wealth of information about the history,
culture and identity of its native speakers. This Hindi-English
dictionary contains more than 4750 expressions, some used in
formal/written contexts, others in a more colloquial register. There
are more than 100 notesabout the literal meaning, origin and
possible origin of some idioms. This work will benefit Englishspeaking students of the Hindi language, who will be able to learn
more about Indian culture.
